QB Springer leads Falcons to third round

If there was a heavy lesson La Joya should have learned on Friday night, it was don’t get Jeremy Springer upset.

The Los Fresnos quarterback admitted his nerves took the best of him early on and his first throw in the Falcons’ first drive to Esia Rivera was off target.

A few plays later, running back Danny Mendez (8 rushes, 61 yards) got a seven-yard run, which led to some pushing and shoving with Springer right in the middle of it.

The playoff intensity of the 6-foot-4, 195-pound signal caller, a potential Division I prospect, transformed him from Clark Kent into Superman.

The senior field general spanked La Joya for 295 yards and a career-high six touchdown passes to lead Los Fresnos to a 55-28 Class 5A Division I area round win over the Coyotes at Leo Aguilar Stadium.

In addition to his remarkable numbers, you can also throw in that the left-hander went 17-of-23 passing to six different receivers along with 73 yards on the ground and two rushing touchdowns. Springer and the rest of the Falcons (12-0) fly into the regional round where they will face Austin Westlake (9-2) at 2 p.m. on Saturday in Victoria.

“I was a little nervous,” Springer admitted. “After that, (pushing and shoving) we just got into it. We weren’t here to lose this game.”

Then there was also Spinger’s supporting cast, Batman and Robin, in wide receivers Esia Rivera and Jorge Mata. Both receivers were sensational on the night as each scored and went over 100 yards. Mata (7 catches, 139 yards, 3 touchdowns) was having so much fun he felt like he was in the playground. Meanwhile, Rivera put his two cents in with 5 catches, 107 yards and two scores.

“It was great to show what we’ve got,” said Mata, who scored in 9, 10 and 15-yard receptions and also had a highlight film juggler catch late in the fourth quarter. “At first, I didn’t think I would get into the end zone.”

Both teams went toe-to-toe early on as each exchanged touchdowns to start the contest. The Coyotes (6-6) managed to move the ball on the Falcon defense early on. On La Joya’s second drive, with the Coyotes trailing 7-6, they opened their play-book by going hook-and-lateral.

Quarterback Javier Acevedo hit receiver Joshua Torres, who lateraled to running back Juan Martinez. The play resulted in a 72-yard reception to the Los Fresnos 8-yard line. It looked as if both of Torres’ knees were down on the play, but officials didn’t rule him down.

Facing a fourth and goal, the Falcons made up for La Joya’s big move by stopping Acevedo short of the goal line. Right away, Springer went to work and found Rivera for a 64-yard reception. That set up Springer’s first touchdown throw to Rivera to finish off the impressive 99-yard drive.

The Coyotes still made things interesting in the second quarter after Acevedo scored on a quarterback keeper from 32 yards and tied the game at 14 after Martinez’ two-point conversion. With 9:38 left in the first half, the Falcons pulled away as they scored three touchdowns on a Rivera catch, Springer run and Mata reception for a 35-14 halftime lead.

In the second half, Los Fresnos jumped out of the gates and scored on only four plays, culminated by Springers’ 15-yard touch-down pass to Mata for a 42-14 lead. By then, the Falcons had the Coyotes on their heels although La Joya did manage to get a couple of more scores before it was all said and done. The Coyotes got a fine performance from Martinez, who had 24 carries for 225 yards and one touchdown. His final carry will be remembered as one-yard shy of the end zone as the Falcons iced the win with another goal-line-stand.

As for the offense, Los Fresnos coach Scott Ford was amazed with how much his offense just keeps getting better and better.

“It’s something we hadn’t done in the past,” Ford said. “I think we played our best football tonight.”

November 27, 2006 — Jeremy Springer says the Los Fresnos Falcons aren’t done yet.

While most great Rio Grande Valley Class 5A football teams of the past remember the third round as a farewell party, Springer said there’s more to come when the Falcons (12-0) face Austin Westlake (9-2) at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Division I regional round in Victoria.

Los Fresnos, along with Harlingen South and McAllen Memorial, looks to join Harlingen High (1989), Mission High (1990) and Edinburg High (1999) as the only 5A programs in the Valley to win three games in the postseason.

“They’re a big team (and) gonna be good,” Springer said. “We’re gonna come out and execute our of-fense and defense. I don’t want my season to end (this) week.”

The Falcons’ season isn’t over, thanks in part to the 6-foot-4, 195-pounder’s performance in Friday night’s 55-28 area round win over La Joya.

The Los Fresnos quarterback gave the Falcon faithful one last memorable show, throwing for 295 yards and a career-high six touchdown passes. He also added 73 yards on the ground and two rushing scores in what was likely the final game of the season at Leo Aguilar Stadium.

Exactly how remarkable has the left-hander been?

At this point, Springer has racked up 3,190 yards, 40 touchdowns and only six interceptions. In fact, the last time Springer was picked off was against Pace over a month ago. Since then, Springer has gone 62-for-99 for 1,329 yards and 21 touchdowns in five games played. An impressive feat considering Springer averages 20 pass attempts a game.

“If a Division-I school don’t come out here to sign him, they’re crazy,” Los Fresnos coach Scott Ford said.

Springer did have some support from teammates Danny Mendez and Siriboto Rareba on the ground. Mendez carried the ball eight times for 81 yards while Rareba rushed for 106 on 13 carries. It was an impressive offensive show, which racked up 540 total yards on 29 first downs.

And thanks to the beef up front led by Mario Benavides, Julian Escalon, Albert Gomez, Aaron Garza, Keith Stober and Eloy Atkinson, Springer ended the game with pretty much a clean jersey.

On defense, the Falcons did give up large chunks of yardage but did force two turnovers, sacked La Joya quarterback Javier Acevedo three times and came up with two goal-line-stands led by middle line-backer Justin Springer and defensive back Trinidad Gara, who picked off Acevedo in the second quarter.

To Ford’s dismay, it was a perfect way to end the 2006 home schedule should it be the finale.

“I’m glad we finished off in style,” Ford said. “It doesn’t get better than that for us.”

There's more to this quarterback than stats, accolades

LOS FRESNOS - Everyone knows Los Fresnos quarterback Jeremy Springer puts up big numbers on the football field.

His 3,187 yards passing and 40 touchdowns this season has put him in the same class as Rio Grande Valley legends like Lupe Rodriguez, Koy Detmer and, more recently, Billy Garza.

But while he has undoubtedly put up numbers that are the stuff of legends, Jeremy Springer is also just a normal kid who loves playing football.

The senior southpaw will lead the Falcons into arguably the biggest game in the program's history as they travel to Victoria to face Austin Westlake (9-2) Saturday afternoon in a Class 5A, Division I regional semifinal clash.

When he's not commanding the Falcon offense down the field, Springer is your normal teenager who likes other activities aside from football, including fishing, basketball and billiards.

In addition, his twin brother Justin, a linebacker for the Falcons, who is one-minute older than Jeremy, is also a big part of his off-the-field life.

"We love to throw the ball around and we're always talking football," he said. "We play video games together all the time and our favorite is Madden '07."

Playing quarterback has more ups than downs, said Springer, a three-year varsity letterman who is in his first year as the full-time signal caller.

"I get to command 10 other guys out there," he said. "You're the guy that calls the plays, calls the shots.

"You take heat whenever you throw a bad ball, but you come back and make a great pass and everyone loves you for that," he continued. "That's the good thing about it."

His love for the position can be traced to his childhood.

As with almost any boy growing up in football-crazed Texas, Springer's favorite NFL player was Cowboys quarterback Troy Aikman, who served as the perfect model.

"He had a great arm and he wasn't the fastest guy in the world," he said. "I don't try to be like him, but I read his book and see what he experienced and try to relate to that.

"I try to be myself, but I try to think like him. He's a good example," he added.

His Aikman-like leadership and poise may not have been more evident than his outing against Weslaco on the road in Week Ten.

After starting tailback Luis Campos went down, Springer ran the ball (23 rushes 138 yards) and willed the Falcons to their first district championship in Class 5A.

"I felt a great sense of urgency," he said. "Anytime you lose a three-year letterman like Luis, it's tough and I had to take it in my hands.

"It meant a great deal (to me). he said of the Weslaco game. "I wanted to win for my team."

Los Fresnos head coach Scott Ford, who's coached stellar athletes including current Oklahoma quarterback Paul Thompson, said Springer is right up there in terms of stellar athletes, and it all starts with the mental game.

"He's not overwhelmed by anything," Ford said. "He definitely embraces a challenge."

Last week against La Joya, Springer met his latest challenge and threw for 295 yards and six touchdown passes. He ran for 71 yards and two more scores, accounting for each of Los Fresnos' touchdowns to pace the Falcons past the Coyotes, 55-28.

Anyone on such a roll would stop and realize what kind of game he's having, right? Not Jeremy Springer.

"I realized I was having a good game when it was 55-28 (and the game was over)," he said. "At the end of the game, that's when I could tell. During the game, I don't think about that."

About his lofty statistics: They're just numbers to this QB.

"No matter what it is, I do everything for my team, I don't do anything for my stats," said Springer, who has 483 yards rushing and 14 more TDs. "I want (our team) to be winners. I want to be remembered as a winner here, not just for stats."

As far as Saturday's matchup is concerned, while he is relaxed with the big game looming, Springer knows the importance of the game for the Falcon football program.

"It's the biggest game of my career and the biggest game for Falcon football," he said. "If we can get this win, it would be the biggest win ever.

I'm nervous, of course, cause I want to win," he continued. "But I'm going to go out there and give it my all, no matter what."

Despite his success on the field, Springer remains unknown in Texas

LOS FRESNOS — December 1, 2006 — On what should be a relatively chilly Saturday afternoon at Memorial Stadium in Victoria, the Los Fresnos Falcons will try to become just the fourth Rio Grande Valley football team to win three playoff games at the 5A level.

It’s quite a feat, but one that wouldn’t be possible without a quarterback who’s already etched his name in the annals of Valley football history.

This season, Jeremy Springer has thrown 40 touchdowns and counting, third most in a season for a Valley player behind Mission High’s Lupe Rodriguez (50) and Koy Detmer (43). He’s compiled 3,194 yards, fourth best in the Valley’s record book and has been picked off only six times.

Not bad for a guy who’s in his first and only try at being a varsity signal caller.

“I was amazed that this is his first year at quarterback,” said Derek Long, the coach of this week’s opponent Austin Westlake after watching a few of Springer’s game films.

The 6-foot-4 senior led the Falcons to a 12-0 record and their first 5A district title this year after spending last season as a wide receiver.

“It was big change from receiver to quarterback,” Springer said. “It’s a lot of responsibility.”

But as he and Falcons’ coach Scott Ford are quick to point out, he’s been ready for that responsibility since he first put on some shoulder pads back in seventh grade.

And although he may have caught passes in the games last year, he spent 90 percent of his time in practice taking snaps, throwing balls and getting ready to become the quarterback he is today.

“He’s really pretty battle-tested even though he didn’t have the reps underneath the Friday night lights,” Ford said. “He’s done a great job of preparing himself to take the reigns. He bided his time, waited his turn and by god he was ready when it came his time.”

Now it’s his time, and he has a chance to prove himself against state powerhouse Westlake and its own star quarterback, Nick Fo-les.

By the numbers there isn’t much of a comparison.

Foles has thrown for nearly 1,000 less yards (2,231) and 15 fewer touchdowns (25) than Springer. In his defense, the Chaps don’t throw the ball as much as Los Fresnos either, so he really couldn’t have done a better job this season leading Westlake to a 9-2 rec-ord, according to his coach.

“I can’t say enough about him,” Long said. “He’s the heart and soul of this team.”

Foles is committed to play college football at Arizona State. Springer is undecided but hasn’t been pursued nearly as much as Fo-les despite having far better numbers.

Not that he cares.

“It does kind of upset me a little bit, but you just can’t worry about that stuff,” Springer said. “I’m not going to worry about it till after the season. That kind of stuff just gets in the way of the game we got this week.”

His coach, however, is a different story.

“It bothers me tremendously,” Ford said. “If Jeremy Springer was starting at Austin Westlake everybody in Texas would know who he is.”

None of that really matters to Springer as prepares to lead the Falcons into the biggest game of their lives and maybe their pro-gram’s history. Ford said it’s a great opportunity to show the state just how underrated Valley football really is.

“Everybody is going to get up Sunday morning and expect to read Westlake 60, Los Fresnos 10,” Ford said. “We’re going up there to make sure that doesn’t happen.”

They have a much better chance with one of the best Valley quarterbacks to ever put on a uniform. And whether he breaks every record and goes to one of the best football universities in the country isn’t a big deal right now. They just have to beat Westlake.

“You want to do your best out there,” Springer said. “When you break records it feels good, but it’s always team first. When you look back 20 years down the road, you’re going to look back on how your team did and that’s it.”
