I've been seeing these ads online everywhere for Vonage, some broadband phone company. They claim to give unlimited calling anywhere in the U.S. and Canada for only $24.99. All you need is an existing high speed internet connection. Does anyone know more about this or does anyone actually have it? More info on whether this is legit would be appreciated. Thanks.

it's legit but the 911 system is screwed up from what I hear..alot of these VOIP companies have gotten screwed because people haven't been able to contact 911 efficiently

They are legit. I think the 911 problem comes from the phone system not knowing exactly where you are calling from so it doesn't know which 911 center to route your call to.

I don't have a land line, but if I did I would probably switch to one of these VoIP companies.

    I use Broadvoice.

Unlimited in state long distance for only 9.95 per month. International is 19.95. All the # options that SWB charged is free. Very easy setup. You select your phone number online during sign up. The box comes a few days later and you just plug it in.

    Haven't had a problem yet.

Check it out. I'm glad I did. I'm not just saying that because I'd like a referral.:)

I think my uncle was trying it out. He was down in Mexico on a business trip and he called me to check how it sounded. I didn't say what company, just that he was calling on his computer.

I have SBC DSL, could I use Vonage? I was told by SBC that I couldn't have a DSL account without a phone account. I might have to switch to RR.

i have vonag and love it, although ocassionally call quality can be an issue for someone on the other end- i don't think this is specifically a vonage problem though, more a problem w/ IP telephony in general. regarding 911 service, verizon recently opened up it's system to all IP telephony providers, so that issue should go away shortly. the issue isn't whether you can call 911, but since your vonage number is a "virtual" one, it's not automatically tied into a geographic location- you have to tell them where you are.

I heard that Vonage has already been sued over the 911 issue...

You gotta love those commercials, though...Has anybody seen the one where they're spinning around with the baseball bats and homedude slams into the metal shed? :D

I found this interesting. With VoIP, you can live in say Seattle and order a 713 number. You can't do that with a cell phone cause it is determined by billing zip code (at least what Cingular told me).
