Both of these guys are about 6'5" 6'6", good 3 pt shooters, great finishers and just crazy athletic/energetic. they seem to fit eachother about as close as any other 2 players in the nba. neither are known as real great defenders(von wasnt too shabby on kobe) and both are questiond on thier consistency(although Von hasnt shown it the past few games). Ive always lookd at j.r. smith as the kind of kid with all the talent in the world but kinda takes his crazy athleticism for granted and isnt someone who is in the gym all summer(complete and total speculation).i hope that isnt the same problem thats been holding von back ,but i really feel that von can play that sort of same 6th role man that can break out in games we need him(once we get mac back). idk, i always love watching a player and finding a player that has the same game and to see how theyve turned out. anyone else feelin this? OH, and j.r. smith is officially rocking an identical mohawk fade??
With the only exception that Wafer isn't a headcase. I did notice the similarities recently when I was looking at some of Wafer's stat lines of late. It's nice to have a guy who can hit threes with enough regularity that the defense has to commit while also having the speed and athleticism to blow past a guy and dunk it. Makes him a very nice compliment to an inside and out game.
I also agree with that. I don't think the OP wasn't saying otherwise. He was just comparing body types and style of play. Smith stepped up big during his 3rd season and hasn't looked back but he did struggle mightily the first two years of his career.
one was a first rounder and the other was a barely drafted. they are both slashers but i would say that von has less natural talent than jr.
J.R. Smith 3pt%: .368 Von Wafer 3pt%: .444 i think the celtics and grizzlies would have to disagree with you.
Where the hell did you get that idea? JR Smith is shooting 37% from 3, while Von is shooting 44%!!!! JR is also an awful free throw shooter at 67%, can you say t-mac-itis? Von is also shooting at a whopping 48% from the field which is amazing for a SG. Both JR and Von have similar games in that they shoot the 3 and slash. However JR is bulkier than Von and has a stronger upper body.
I would say he is more like a young Ray Allen with a little more speed and hops. They are both 6' 5" both, with similar build, and can shoot. Their release is a little similar too. J.R. Smith isn't nearly as quick as Von Wafer and I would say Von handles the ball better too.
I dont see how other guards cant follow their method. Launch 3 pointers/Slash to basket/Be 6'5 and above looking all athletic doing it/Nothing in between Gunner-Slasher, make shots, thats it. Not "hating", just shows the simple act of actually MAKING shots go through the hoop at a respectable % can still get appreciated.
Okay so far I've heard Caron Butler, JR Smith, a young Ray Allen, a smaller Rashard Lewis, "A poor man's right handed Michael Redd." LOL! How about just Von Wafer? He's had a nice stretch of games and he's producing nicely but please don't compare him to any of the above mentioned players. Those guys are all infinitely more talented/polished than Von Wafer. Wafer has been a journeyman his young career and he would've been content to just catch a final roster spot. However, I give him props because he has a great work ethic and it shows because he's capitalizing on what seems to be his "lucky" break. With that said lets just let Von Wafer be Von Wafer instead of comparing him to other proven veterans/stars. He sure is a breath of fresh air though from the number of scrubs we've tried to play backup SG such as Derek Anderson, David Wesley, Erick Piatkowski, Adrian Griffin, Kirk Snyder, Keith Bogans, Reece Gaines, Bonzi Wells, Luther Head.
Nice take, however I believe Wafer had work ethic problems before like the people you mentioned (Eddie Griffin, Bonzi Wells etc). The guy is certainly too talented to be traded around like he had been if he didn't have attitude problems. Let's just hope he has matured and put it behind him, as he is though he's definitely a steal for us.
I can only think of one incident that would make you say that, when he was in the club and poured champagne on the girl. I think he was the least at fault in that NY brawl and the incident that killed his friend was just bad driving. Those are the only things i remember, am i missing something?
