Hey everybody, Been a member for a few years - but this is the first time I ever started a thread. I guess I'm due. I'm interested in helping out my fellow man by getting involved in a local volunteer organization. Any suggestions as far as what organization that should be are welcome - let me know of any such groups you guys belong to. I'm pretty open to what that work might entail. Since I'm a CPA, most people I ask tell me I should help elderly people with their tax returns - but: a) tax time only comes once a year, and b) (more importantly) I'm no tax expert. Besides, I want to venture into new areas. I can't be the only person here who has the inspiration to volunteer, but lacks the direction. Here's the chance to make a pitch for your favorite organization to a captive audience of Rockets fans (with loads of free time now that the season is over)! Thanks!
If you're in Houston, check out http://www.volunteerhouston.org -- They're a clearinghouse for volunteer opportunities in the Houston area. Good luck!
If you want to help the youth, look into coaching and organizing youth activities during the summer. I know here coaches dont get paid for their work and are in high demand. for the elderly go to rest homes, read, talk, and just help out wherever you can. But its more of a personal choice. Make sure you are doing something that you enjoy, or you might come to dislike you work, even if it is charitable
