You boys are slacking. Pretty big news.

    http://www.bbc.com/news/business-34311819

VW equipped their diesel vehicles with defeat devices that disguised pollution levels in emission tests. Testing has shown their diesel vehicles emit about 40x over the standard.

VW is recalling almost 500,000 vehicles from 2009+

Up to an 18 brazillion dollar fine, but a quarter of that would be realistic.

So why did they do it? More power? Better MPG?

Might be wrong, but I thought VW has a reputation of being cool & hip and maybe even "cleaner" automobile that attract the younger generation, who tend to care more about pollution. The one time penalty might be huge, but their reputation might be their doom.

All of the above. To reduce emissions, they have to pump dirty exhaust back into the engine which reduces power and gunks stuff up.

Yeah but fanboys in general have nothing to do with reason. I was considering getting a Golf a year or so ago and crossed shopped it with several other vehicles. I still think it's a good car (ultimately did a 180 and got a truck), but talking to people and reading online discussions I was surprised to find how passionately VW drivers love that brand and hate everyone else (especially Subaru).

Anyway, don't mean to derail the thread...

Maybe that's why their marketshare in the US isn't that great...niche audience. Subaru in the performance car market is one too.

I was also interested in a Golf because of the fake mileage but reviews about repair costs and frequency scared me away from rolling that dice.

I think the article stated more power and better "driving experience". Curious how it could equate to better mpg.

It will take years possibly a decade before VW recovers from this hit. I don't know what their executives were thinking. Whoever signed off on this should get fired, and that's the least of their worries.

Even before this, I always held the Mazda 3 (former 626 owner) in higher regards to the Golf. The Japanese in general do cars better than anyone else.

I knew these 2 were the same person ...

Seriously, though ... the models affected from the article are the TDI versions of the following. :

    ◾Jetta (2009 - 2015)
    ◾Beetle (2009 - 2015)
    ◾Audi A3 (2009 - 2015)
    ◾Golf (2009 - 2015)
    ◾Passat (2014 - 2015)

I can't believe higher ups didn't know about this. It'll be interesting to see how this affects VW. GM built crappy cars forever and now has commercials that say "I can't believe this is a Chevy..." and still sells cars right and left. Now they're doing the same with Buick. Hell, even Ford is in on the "we used to suck, but not anymore" kick. lol.

He is probably talking about the ones where the accelerator stuck on and killed people.

i would never buy a VVW

on a serious note however, it's no secret the feds have been trying to block diesel passenger cars for decades because high MPG vehicles mean less tax revenue for them w/ regards to federal fuel surcharges. they've fought electric/hybrid behind the scenes as well and will likely eventually have to switch the fuel taxes from MPG-based to something on emissions-output instead -- hence the sudden operation into enforcing accurate emissions reporting..
