i just installed vista and im having touble connecting to the internet. im connected through a router and i know it works. im typing this from my laptop directly connected to the router through an ethernet cable. im connecting a cable to my computerthat has vista the same way, but i cant get connected.

Another thing. What the hell is PPPoE? It says how do you want to connect and PPPoE is the only option i have...

Yeah, I always had stupid issues with direct connection on Vista with my laptop when I was running RC2. Sometimes it worked and other times it was just acting up and I could never figure out why.

But wireless always worked perfectly so it was pretty confusing. I figured they'd have fixed those problems with the full release but I guess not.

Note to self: do not get Vista for at least one year.

How did you install it - clean or upgrade? I did an upgrade on my laptop and was able to connect to my router but I could not get out to the Internet. Nothing I tried worked. I pulled out an old hard drive and did a clean install of Vista on the same laptop and had no networking problems whatsoever. I assume I had some driver that was hosing me over.

Unfortunately, we are buying a new laptop and that is not an option.

Sadness & frustration looming on the horizon.

I don't own vista yet but I don't understand why vista is trying to connect to your router using PPPoE. PPPoE is a protocol used by your modem/router to connect to the ISP gateway. Mabye it's the firewall configurations.

    i know what i did.....

usually on XP, once it says local area connection enabled, im able to connect the internet

but on vista you have to tell it which users are allowed to connect to the local area connection

kinda stupid. took almost the whole day to figure that out...
