as stated before, i'm about to purchase a new laptop. i've heard from some people that you should go with 2 gigs RAM for vista to run smoothly and others have said 1 will be enough. what is everyone's thoughts on this?
a built a new desktop a couple of months ago and decided to go with vista x64. big mistake. after multiple recurring problems, my patience ran out and i'm now back to xp. but anyways, to answer your question, i would recommend 2 gb.
hey thacabbage. I usually don't respond to these threads because they snowball into every geek second guessing each other...and I hate this **** cept when friend ask....but I like to consider you a net/bball friend they are lying to you...somewhat. spending money on RAM is always a good choice. But spending money on software and games is always a good choice, too. What you have to consider is every dollar you spend on hardware/RAm, you could be spending on games and software. what you want to weigh is, does the motherboard allow you to upgrade to 2 gigs later...because RAM will be cheaper then...if so, they are lying to you. save the money now, buy an iPhone or software or take you girl out for 4 nights and screw the extrea 1 gig....until you actually need it. when it is cheaper did i help?
I started the same thread when I was getting a new cpu with vista. I got my mine with 1g and have been running with no problems at all. I don't do any gaming but I do open very big Photoshop files, multiple apps, and it runs smooth as can be. 1g has been fine. Start with one and upgrade if you think you need to. I haven't come close to needing to yet.
Some ram is real cheap right now to the point where you should get it (<$40). 2 gigs will save you time looking for it in the future.
Depends on what you're doing on it, but no Vista box should have less than 2 gigs on it. Even if you're disabling the Aero interface, I'd still get 2 gigs. I've been running on 2 gigs for a Vista box I built a while ago, but I may bump that up to 4 gigs to do video editing and some other stuff I'm thinking about getting into. I'm about to build another Media Center/PVR box with Vista and the minimum on that will be 2 gigs as well.
I honestly would go for four. first time in the window's environment that an application can access more than 2gigs (without what they call the 3gig switch). Might not matter to most - but it might matter soon depending on your video card and what happens with coding in the future. I use a lot of soft synths and some of those can have pretty large files. I could certainly benefit from vista if I get to the point I feel confident everything else is going to play well together (UAD, etc).
A system capable of utilizing over 1gig should be impressive. But Vista is seemingly using the RAM for "pee pee" games.
Hmm... just rebooted my Vista box and I'm using over 800 megs. I do have firewall, anti-virus, Aero, the Sidebar, and some piddly apps loaded, but...
my friend's laptop runs vista with 1 gig extremely smooth. that said, there's always so many good laptop deals floating around that you can get 2 gigs for just a fraction more. i'd atleast play it safe and make sure you can upgrade the ram later should you choose to. you never know.
what you show running is not what you really need at that moment...not necessarily. good apps will eat what they can get and back off when others need the ram/cpu more. does that make sense? I can explain it another way.
Well yeah, I know about Superfetch for pre-caching of apps, but I just never noticed it used that much memory from the beginning until I just re-started the box.
I think 4 is a little overboard, but with memory DRAM prices being down over 50% since the beginning of 2007, it is alot more feasible these days.
My bud just bought a dell laptop with 1 gb. It's running vista with out any problems, surprising very fast. I'm running 4gbs in my desktop with my E6700 CPU. Runs nicely.
for what I do there is really no reason to upgrade to Vista unless I specifically want to increase the amount of ram my software can access. Some sample libraries that exist out there are 80gigs on their own. Depending on the orchestration and which virtual instruments I am using (as well as plugins) I can max out 2 gigs fairly quickly. It's really no big deal because there are work-a-rounds to free up ram while I am working but it will be nice to get to the point where that isn't required. For gamers I can't really see the need. I'm sure 2 gigs would be more than enough. For some other types of work where streaming large files from ram is required Vista will be a huge help (once the kinks are worked out). Cheers, Brock
