A short interview on Rockets.com with Yao and Big Z about the surgery that Yao went through.

From what Big Z said, Yao's recovery might take even longer than we have expected... Z said that after the surgery that realigned his foot, all the tendons were stretched in unnatural ways, and he had a lot of pain playing while getting used to the new bone structure. He didn't play a lot of minutes for the next 2 years as a precaution, and said the recovery basically looks like a 2 year plan.

I guess there goes my hope that Yao will come back next season and dominate again. :(

Well on the bright side he said it took two years to get in complete game form bc of precaution. He mention the issues he went through with pain but it lasted for a couple months.

Is that surgery even worse than microfracture?

this is a more than just a severe sports surgery. the doctors are actually re-aligning the bones.

it doesn't look good for yao. there is no way he can return and resume anywhere close the responsibilities he once can hold.

i just wish he can return and be a good player.

I guess the difference in the two surgeries is that Big Z's was 9 years earlier. Very gracious of Big Z to offer his advice and experiences.

Hopefully rehabbing techniques have evolved enough to make Yao's return a little sooner.

Maybe, but Yao will likely be welcomed back by the team because he hasn't acted like a douche.

This is awful. Of all people in the league, it seems like the nicest, most upstanding players end up getting these kinds of injuries.

Well the benefit of this could be on the financial side. If his production is less than his best, which is likely to be the case, the next contract he signs may be for much less than the max.

Cap room flexibility is always a plus.

Great video, great post. Wierd how Big Z handled his first season back. He didnt practice very often, did not play back to backs, limited minutes... sound familiar?

I have no doubt that Yao will eventually return to his old form with the same mobility and the same speed if you will..just will take time.

i'd like to see yao come off the bench for the rest of his career
our core guys are fast and agile and tough
yao does not fit with the big picture

I am pretty sure Morey is looking at Yao to be one of the main cogs of this team when he returns. I say one of them because this team is proving to be a true team, without egos, and Yao Ming can thrive in a system like this. We don't need that one "superstar player" or one "goto guy." We'll be like the Pistons a few years ago, with Yao Ming being a big weapon for us. Need I remind you of the 08-09 Rockets from the Rafer trade to Game 3 of the Lakers? That team right there was the best team Houston put out on the floor this decade.

Ilgauskas was never a 20/10 player like Yao even before the surgery. His numbers never really went down as he returned from surgery either. He was a 15/8 type of guy before and still was (and at times better) when he came back. Anyways, my point is Yao is on another level from Ilgauskas, his skillset is way bigger and IMO he's probably a harder worker. Yes it will take some time, but we can't just say Yao never be his old self again and write him off like that. Ilgauskas also rarely missed games after he returned from the surgery so that's another thing to look forward to ;)

Yao will be back next season ready to go.
