I just uploaded video of Yao with the Chinese National team from 2002. This is from an exhibition game with Steve Nash and the Canadian team in Vancouver that August after he had been drafted by the Rockets. Rudy is there watching him.

    <object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/FLXwzaNnv9w"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/FLXwzaNnv9w" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object>

You'll notice, as raw as Yao was, he still had moves and showed flashes of what makes him great today. Also, check out the dunk in the guys face and the look Yao gives him afterwards. For those who said Yao would be a bust really didn't know much about him.

After the game footage there is some video from an interview shot before the game. Notice how Yao's english was quite good then, although he did need some help from the translator from time to time.

Thanks for clip as well as all the other clips. You are right that Yao was already very skilled before he came into the league. It is more the physical aspect of the game and playing tempo and environment he had to get used to. He said recently to a Chinese new media that he already had most of his moves because he came here.

Yao is so damn funny. At the end of clip, when he was asked what impression he had about the city of Houston, the last thing he said was "The coach (Rudy), he had me fouled out in 15 minutes in the 2000 Olympics (when China played USA). Now he will want to do it the other way around."

Of course. You can see it just through how he gets up from the floor, after falling. Nowadays, its a labour.

Yao has become a better interviewer too. Even when he had a translator in 2002, he would never really answer the questions. Now he understands and answers interview questions pretty well.

We should seriously ban the word Barkley in this site!!
Barkley should be an official curse word!!

Barkley: I am trying out for the next fat b*stard in the next Austin Power movie!

yeh he looked quick, but looked a little reckless. when he tried doing that in his first few months in the league he was turning it over a lot, b/c of the quicker defenders and help defense. Now he's learned to tone it down a little and use suttle moves to gain an advantage. You can see his moves are more refined and disciplined now.

Maybe he didn't notice who the No.7 on the Canadian team is, Mr. Two-time NBA MVP.

watch the play that starts with about 7 minutes to go in the clip. Yao gets bumped a little and clearly looks back at the ref and says, "where's the f***ing foul?"

maybe yao had his 'tude' all along.
