Here's 8 minutes of JVG from Friday's meeting with the media. http://www.click2houston.com/video/13262758/index.html
JVG said he was disappointed with Yao's repetitive high turnovers almost every game in the series except game 2. Even PGs like Rafer and Deron Williams, don't have so many turnovers. Don't turn the damn ball over geez!
Yao has been playing tenatively, and thinking too much, he just needs to go out there and make quick decisive moves and he will be alright. DD
One turnover was on a travel,Ak47 got away with alot of them. two were 3 second violations,I blame the guards for not passing him the ball two more were on horrible passes, luther should not make the entry pass. that leaves us with 3 turnovers that were legit, well thats if you overlook, yao getting intentionally elbowed in the back by fisher.
noo thats wrong those 3 second violations are yaos fault like I said yao has been playing like he forgot everything he learned in fundamentals of the post and luther had one bad entry pass and yao is not credited for that even though that was definetly yaos fault he asks for the ball on many occasions but he didnt hold his postion ...yao needs to get big and get a wide base..utah is good at ball pressure and yao has to hold his postion for longer than a second to receive the ball..those turnovers were on yao no doubt
yao shouldn't look for the double anymore. it ain't coming. sometimes when he overthinks of the double teams when they don't come, he forces some passes like he did to hayes for one of his turnovers. just don't overthink yao. it's 1-on-1. think of yourself v. okur and put more arc just in case freakin ak47 long arms. and tmac, please take your game to 2 levels. only game 5 was the typical playoff tmac.
strange that he says only 2 players remain from the 2005 game 7 loss, but wasn't it tmac, yao, juwan, deke... and sura if you can count him???
What Yao needs to do is work harder to get deeper position and as soon as he gets the ball he needs to shoot it or pass it back out. He can't hold on to the ball longer than 3 seconds or the defense will collapse on him.
Yao needs to start turning towards the baseline more. Why not more hook shots? Heck, even face up jumpers would do. Stop doing that fadeaway! It's not working!!!
Does Van Gundy bother to look at Yao's TOs before he opened his big grumpy mouth? The only TOs that should be exclusively attributed to Yao are his travel violation (#4 above), and stolen ball by Okur (#5) if the ball stripping is clean. The others are due to Yao's aggressiveness (it's decidedly hilarious there are morons on this board bashing Yao's perceived "softness" and his turnovers caused by aggressiveness at the same time) and biased officiating (what can we expect from guys like Ken Mauer and Dick Bavetta), incompetence of teammates, and bad coaching. Yao has a penchant for setting moving screens, most of which should indeed be called. Yet Van Grumpy never seems to have a problem with that, only to complain when TOs result from the illegal picks. It's Gundy's game plan to insist Yao stay in the low post, but the head coach doesn't do even an adequate job to command the guards to 1) throw decent entry pass in time, 2) repost Yao, and 3) have him move to the high post if defender forces him out of position. Gundy is what's wrong with the Rockets -- time for this small man to get the hell out of Rockets team, win or lose game 7.
He was asked a question about Yao's turnovers and he said he was disappointed but that was in the past and he was more concerned about what happens going forward. He also mentioned that turnovers were a team wide problem. He wasn't calling out Yao.
