What do you guys think about it? Personally I'd be all for this. XBox Live Gold in the UK costs about £40 ($60 US), so this new PSN service shouldn't cost much more, if any, than what XBL is currently. A free PSN game sounds great, and the music streaming service would be great as long as it's mostly ad-free and doesn't require subscription fees. If they include Qore as well it would really be the ultimate PSN experience possible.

NOTE: This doesn't mean there will no longer be a free PSN. The article emphasizes that the PSN of now will not change, there will just be some more features for users who pay this fee.

It only makes sense. Xbox was right and PS3 was wrong. Making ppl pay to play online is the smartest thing as it filters out cheaters and people who just like annoying players.

At least there are some consequences in xbox. Force them to pay and the quality of online play increases

Had to happen at some point. Sony couldn't charge for it out of the gate with the system costing so damn much, but at this point they can't leave that money on the table. It'll start out as premium content costs, but it'll only be a matter of time before the free service is axed or becomes so watered down it's useless.

    I won't be purchasing it.

The only service they could offer that would possibly interest me is something along the lines of Myth TV. A DVR service. Aside from that I just don't see them putting worth into a subscription based product. They better not take anything away from what is currently free.

They won't at first, but a year from now if you want to play new games online, you'll need to pay to get the full service. Maybe they'll keep a few map packs free, but the free stuff will dry up completely in the next few years. I wonder how long before Home is no longer free. I don't use it so it doesn't matter much to me, but I could see some folks getting bent out shape.

wreck, I hope you're right. If Sony starts charging, they'd better get their act together and improve the service.

The flip side of this is that Microsoft will start charging more for their service as well.

Interesting. I wonder how soon the regular PSN users will start feeling the affect of premium existence.

Anyone want to buy my Metal Gear Solid PS3 for $350? Backwards compatible with MGS4 and has dual shock wireless controller. I only watched blu-ray movies a few times on it. Just moved into a new home and want to sell this for a new water softener

This is a rumor. And frankly, kind of seems like VG247 is just throwing stuff out there in hopes that something ends up actually happening.

That said, this isn't all that different from the survey that Sony put out a while back. If they implemented everything there, then maybe I might bite. I don't know, would have to wait and see exactly how things turned out (what games are actually selected).
