I used to be really into the Mortal Kombat series back in the day, but as I got older I realized how superior the Street Fighter series was from a strategic standpoint. My current favorite is: Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo HD Remix*. However, I do really enjoy playing Marvel vs. Capcom 2 against friends who are in the same room (i.e. not over the internet). That game can get hilariously out of control sometimes - great for trash talking and laughing with friends. *I haven't played SF4 yet though.
Gotta go with SF. All the Capcom vs. was great though. Powerstone and Soul Calibur are fun too. Guilty Gear and Blazblue look fun. Too bad I pretty much suck at all of them. I have very little patience/time for games with steep learning curves now.
The one I played more than any other was Street Fighter Alpha 2. Street Fighter 2 (SNES) came in second. But I chose the Capcom ones because at the time I was a huge Marvel fan and that alliance was like a dream come true.
Lol I know what you mean. I play it all the time with friends but stay away from online. They make me want to never play it again. But of course Street Fighter 2 is one of the best and Marvel vs Capcom is just like an All star version. Power Stone is another lesser know game that was really good, but wonder why Smash Brothers wasn't an option? Maybe just asking about traditional fighters.

Still the most fun I ever had at the arcade. The greatest summer of my life spend in Montreal at Nintendome playing this on a big screen.
