Video games group offers industry's version of Oscars

We need a catchier name for one of the biggest awards in video games: the Academy of Interactive Arts and Science's Interactive Achievement Awards, a mouthful that describes the game industry's version of the Oscars.

If you missed the awards, here are the games to look for the next time you're shopping.

Battlefield 1942, Electronic Arts' World War II strategy game for PCs, took the most awards. It was named Game of the Year and Computer Game of the Year, and it also got awards for innovation and for online game play.

Other awards for PC games went to Grand Theft Auto III, Medal of Honor: Allied Assault, Neverwinter Nights, the Sims Unleashed, Madden NFL 2003, the Sims Online and Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos.

Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell was Console Game of the Year. Other console winners were Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, Tekken 4, Metroid Prime, Ratchet & Clank, Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit 2, Animal Crossing, Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus, Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem and Madden NFL 2003.

Mario Party 4 was the family game of the year, and Metroid Fusion won top hand-held game honors.

On the PC side, I would have liked to see No One Lives Forever 2 and Age Of Mythology included.

As far as consoles, I am glad to see Metroid Prime get its due. It alone makes Gamecube worth having. Sly Cooper was great as well for PS2.

Splinter Cell is the best game that's come out in the past two years. IMNSHO.

Anyone know when the new downloadable content will be available for SC? (Xbox)

Splinter Cell best in the last two years?

    You must be joking.

Ever heard of a little game called Halo?

Easily the best game of all time.

Halo isn't even the best FPS of all time. That honor goes to Half-Life.

Glad to see Battlefield 1942 get its due. Best multiplayer game I've played in a loooong time. That reminds me, I need to get the expansion pack for that game...

Next year, I think Zelda: The Windwaker is gonna walk away with "Console Game of the Year." But don't listen to me; I'm heavily biased towards Nintendo. :)

Right now Halo is probably my second favorite game. I am still old school and have to say plain old Zelda is my favorite game. I am hoping Halo 2 is less linear in first person and coop mod.

Because Half-life doesn't have any of those options for multiplayer?

I guess I was just imagining playing those with TFC or counterstike. ;)

Plus I've never liked playing FPS's with game pads. I do admit to not playing Halo all the way through single player but I just couldn't get into the MP as much just because of the lack of keyboard/mouse.

HH is the best baseball sim out there for the PC, IMHO. Very versatile, loads of options, top notch graphics and game play.

I don't have 2004, but I was happy with 2003, though it was just a slightly dressed up version of 2002. I hear 2004 will include options like dealing with the budget and player contracts, that will be cool. I've never played it on console though, so I don't know what the difference is. As for the Getaway, I have it, it's not everything I had hoped it would be, I suggest you rent it first. My complaints are about how they tried to hard to make it a movie, so you have long unskippable cinemas and no user interface, so you can't see your ammo or your life, there's no map, so you rely on turnsignals to navigate through the city, and you heal by leaning against walls.

where are the rpg's? most notably WHERE IS SUIKODEN III????

god, i love suikoden. i wasted a way many precious hours on that. usually in the hours between 11 pm-3am. i would go on suikoden binges at night. then id wake up at nine to go places and have a life, but id always make sure to be home at 11 at which point i would go back on my suikoden binge.

and i cant belive none of you seem to like metal gear solid 2. that game is amazing.
