    Some notes...

After 2 months and 687K PS3s sold, the PS3 has sold slightly more than what the PS2 and 360 sold in their first two months (both about ~600K IIRC). Depending on how many went unsold during the month (supposedly a ton of PS3s at stores?), Sony may not have met their 1M shipped target according to this data (though the tracking period might have something to do with that too...it is somewhat close, so it is hard to tell for sure). Software sales seem to suck for the PS3 though. A Blu-ray player indeed. It would be interesting to see how much it sells in January, which might be a better indication of what the demand is like.

The Gamecube actually sold more systems at this point (~1.2M after two months) than the Wii, which gives you an idea of how few Wiis there are out there. Seems like Nintendo missed their US/NA target by quite a bit (2M was their target IIRC). Once Nintendo can get that straightened out (maybe an issue with the straps?), sales should really start taking off; up to this point, they've really struggled to meet demand (probably could've sold 1.2M+ in December if they shipped that many, far eclipsing what the GC sold in the same time). Great numbers by Zelda (over 1M for both platforms in Dec., like 1.5+ million LTD).

Good month for the 360. Expectations were slightly higher, but I think it still sold more than twice what it sold in its previous best-selling month...which was the month before (good momentum). MS might have liked having more than ~4.5M systems in the US at this point, but they're still millions ahead of the competition (and it will probably stay that way until Sony and Nintendo can get their issues straightened out). Great numbers for GOW. Probably doing better than expectations, and it had some pretty high expectations.

Wow at PSP numbers. I thought it was basically dead, at least at the current price tag. Software numbers still aren't that great I believe, and the DS is still at a whole other level, but I'm still pretty surprised at how well it sold. Still don't know how or why the PS2 is still selling so well.

edit: Some reactions from Nintendo and Sony:

friggin PS2 is just weird, sony must be doing something right as a PAST-GEN console is outselling all of the CURRENT-GEN consoles.

    PS2 FTW

    forget the 360, Wii, etc.

PS2 is testament to the fact that a *large* majority of gamers are far from the 'hardcore' or even 'regular' market. Lots of casual players looking for a good deal and don't care enough to spend more than the 130 bucks for a system and get lots of cheap games.

I'm not all that surprised at PSP sales. The hardware has always been impressive and at the very least the software library has grown. I think it is probably an extension of the same market I mentioned with the PS2.

And yeah, the DS is a monster.

the PS2 is a great system. it's relatively inexpensive and the game library is massive...with plenty of great titles.

    A little more info...

The Xbox 360 HD DVD add-on sold ~50K in December, which, along with the ~42K it sold in November, puts the total at ~92K. Source here:

Also...PSP software sales are really bad, despite the nice surge in hardware sales. Here are the best-selling games for the PSP in 2006:
