I was going to write this in the Modern Warfare thread but wanted to ask the question and stick to just this topic. The game itself is entertaining and fun but there is just one problem I had with it. In one of the stages you play an American posing as an Russian in a group of Russian terrorists as they attack an Russian airport full of civilians to start full blown war. The part played an big role in the story but I found the stage unsettling. I give the game some what decency that in the beginning they tell you that some of the game maybe offensive and tells you that you can skip it, but I just found it strangely disturbing. Now I'm not a prude at all and have play so many gory games from massacring swarms of zombies with an AK and having body parts flying everywhere to going on a killing spree and shooting people on the streets and blowing up cop cars but have never felt disturb because there just games. But the realism of seeing people running in terror and screaming, while others try to help people that have been shot and seeing people crawling being shot seem was a little but too much for me. Maybe it was the graphic realism that sadden me and wanted to know other people's thought on it. Did Activision go too far with even having the option to be a terrorist?

No.. they gave a disclaimer so its your fault if you find it too much. But actually I am with you, I did find it a little disturbing how you calmly walked, not even able to run at the beggining and just mowed people down. However, it just adds to the realism of the game and I don't think it should have been ommited.

Also, you should have probably added a spoiler tag somewhere for people who havent gotten there yet :p

This whole thread needs a spoiler.

And no it's not too much. My kids won't be playing it, or GTA.

It gives you a choice if you don't want to see it, so I don;t think it's a big deal. I have not played the campaign yet, but there is plenty of stuff in video games that are like this imo.

Apologize about the spoiler but it's early in the game and it's not this biggest one. I mean who would have thought that at the end the game you find out the whole thing was planned by Canada. Those ice-holes. And maybe I should have asked in the thread people that have played the game. I mean I had heard about the it a couple of weeks ago from modders that had played it already and thought it was strange but was thinking oh God I don't want to hear this bull when it comes out on FOX News. Little to my surprise they are going ape **** over this. But my views aren't crazy blown out of proportion like the rest of the news media just wondered if people that had played the game found it disturbing? I mean playing tons of gory games I've never been disturbed by any game except this one. And I've played both Manhunts which is probably the most gruesome game by far. Even playing it on Wii to where you have to motion with the Wii remote of strangling and stabbing somebody....talk about messed up. Maybe the shotty graphics threw me off. :D

I was amazingly able to see that it was actually in a game and not in real life. Yes it was a bit disturbing how calmly you walked but in the end there is a disclaimer which gives you the option to not see it so its ok in my opinion.

I'm saying I've played all these games and have never had a problem but the weird setting and initial start up of the mission just had me feeling a bit disturbed. I was wondering if anybody else felt odd playing that part?

    Ever seen Schindler's List?

Games will take the leap sooner rather than later. "Mature" games will become much more emotional and raw, and hopefully they become an artform.
I have never been so involved and emotionally moved while playing a game, Dragon Age has really striked a chord with me. I have yet to play much COD, but I think they are going for the same thing. The feelings that you are having are natural, and exactly what the game makers want. Without those feelings, it is nothing more than a game.

I seriously do not even come close to understanding the uproar about this level. Its a freaking GAME!

Do you realize how many video games utilize a gun to kill someone?

So what if the setting is in an airport...big deal. Its a game.

Heck, I'll murder every one of those civilians...restart the mission, and then find different ways to kills them.

The sensitivity to this is absurd.

    Its a game.

When will "games" elevate themselves to another level, and become art?
    I hope it is soon.

I get tired of people saying "It's just a game!!!"...

My point is that there are way too many people making a big deal out of that level.

Most games that come out nowadays are total works of art. That doesnt mean its not a game. Its still a video game. But its art. They arent mutually exclusive.

You state you don't get upset with other gruesome games because they're just that... games.

Are you and some Russians physically walking into an airport and unloading round after round into countless civilians?

    ... I thought not.

    It is still a game.

The uproar over this is absolutely absurd.

I find nothing wrong with the level whatsoever - and in fact - quite enjoyed playing through it.

The overreaction of people in the media trying to get attention is in my opinion sad. If you don't want your kids to be playing that's fine - don't force your opinions on others.

Now time to go back and replay the mission - this time i'll cook some frags instead of spending all my ammo. Yeaaa boiiiiiii

That is exactly why it gives you the choice if you would like to see it or not at the begining of the game..

GTA 4 is worse so no I don't think its too much.

Plus you don't have to shoot the people to pass the level, just walk behind the dudes while they do ths shootings until you get to the outside part.

I haven't played the game, but I just watched the youtube clip in this page and the words "emotional" and "raw" are definitely accurate descriptions. During the beginning sequence at the baggage claim I was like "HOLY Shhh...". A visceral experience, to say the least.

And while that clip was definitely pretty hardcore for a game, that's a good thing in my eyes. The media and a lot of people get so up in arms about games taking on mature themes because in their mind they equate games to fun things that little Johnny plays after school. They need to realize that some of these games are rated M, and much like an R-rated movie they are going to contain mature themes and scenarios.

Along with Schindler's List, another fitting movie to mention in this thread would be Saving Private Ryan. If there are ever games that can evoke the types of emotions that those movies did during certain points, that game will easily become one of my all-time favorites. To get lost in the immersion and feel all of the emotions, both good and bad, like you are a part of the game is what just about everyone game developer should be aiming for, in my opinion.

No they didn't go too far. The game is for a mature audience and they even give you an option to skip the stage.

btw... its only a video game
