This is 18 minutes of your life you'll never get back, but interesting anyway.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5SaFTm2bcac

This fascinating, brilliant 20-minute video narrates the history of the "Amen Break," a six-second drum sample from the b-side of a chart-topping single from 1969. This sample was used extensively in early hiphop and sample-based music, and became the basis for drum-and-bass and jungle music -- a six-second clip that spawned several entire subcultures. Nate Harrison's 2004 video is a meditation on the ownership of culture, the nature of art and creativity, and the history of a remarkable music clip.

Ok...maybe the first 8 minutes are interesting. After awhile the guys voice will put you to sleep. At least I learned something today.

It's worth listening to the end as it comes around and makes a good, well articulated point.

I can't watch from work, but I'll bet I know the exact loop they're talking about. I always thought it was from a James Brown tune and he (along with his drummer) got royalties from every song that used it.

Is it the beat that's sampled at the end of the Public Enemy/Anthrax version of Bring The Noise when Chuck is saying "hear the drummer get wicked"?

OK, that was silly. The whitebread narrator says...here is one of the earliest recordings from the early hip-hop/sampling days...3rd Base in 1989(?) Since when was 1989 early for a movement that started in the late '70s?

The drum beat came from the 1969 song Amen Brother by The Winstons.

Used in NWA's Straight Outta Compton.

It has been altered a bit but, yes, that is the same one.

Pariliament also had a lot of songs that were sampled. I can't remember which one it was but I think one of their songs became three fairly big hip-hop songs. As diverse as De La Soul to Dr Dre.

I want to know the sample that was used in Eric B & Rakim's "Paid In Full". That beat has been used so many times. I was just wondering who came up with that one.

I just watched the video. Yep, that's the beat I was thinking of. Like I said, I always thought it was a James Brown tune. Now I know. Good stuff.

BTW, I kept waiting for the narrator to say "fitter...happier....more productive"

I think it's incredibly convienent for the narrator's final point that the Winstons seem not to care that they've been cheated out of millions.

It's easy to drive home that "public domain, everyone's happy with free samples!" point when the sample in question comes from a band that seems not to give a rip about the fact that it's made hundreds of other people millions of dollars. Nearly ruined the clip for me.

Your mileage may vary. I found his pedantic preaching at the end to be incredibly annoying. I ended up turning it off for the final two minutes.

I'm going to start hearing this everywhere, and then I'm going to get pissed off because I recognize it.

That guy talks in a monotone. Without the music samples, I'd have fallen asleep within 3 minutes of starting the video. Kind of wish I would have anyway.

The clip wasn't bad just listening to it.

In today's climate something like the Amen Break wouldn't be open to new artists for another 90-120 years.

Reminds me of that fake news story where Metallica was copyrighting the E chord or something along those lines. I guess the question is to what extent do you take the copyrighting. Take any piece of music and I'm sure you can find pretty ridiculous similarities to something that's already been done.
