Most of you have probably seen this, I just saw it again and couldn't believe it when I saw it... http://www.wimp.com/ORLEANS
What all did we see in the cops' looting cart? From what I could see it looked like some baby clothes, maybe some adult clothes, some sandals. What else? I'm asking because the items we saw could fall under the necessities category -- perhaps for themselves, perhaps people they're helping? Just to give them the benefit of the doubt. It still doesn't do great things for maintaining order as onlookers will still see cops looting and not really differentiate between needed items like clothes and food and other items like TVs.
I was speaking with a family that my neighbor and I hosted and they had their own version of a looting story. What they told me was that the police were themselves breaking windows and instructing people to get only necessities. Just another example of folks sitting in A/C while typing on their computers passing judgement on people in virtual doomsday situations. Morality changes in a state of emergency. Just ask Dubya himself as he thinks a little thing called privacy isn't all that important after 9/11.
I agree that it's hard to pass judgement for us sitting and watching these clips. But for some police officers to be looting while others are risking their lives to stop it is not right. Breaking windows and telling people to get only the necessities is like opening a bank vault and telling people to only take $10 bucks each.
I don't think you can justify that. You see people in the video taking out toys etc. The cops have sneakers. Sorry but that isn't essential for survival. Crisis doesn't build character, it reveals it.
