I saw this list at the Goat's website. don't know its credibility.

I think Kobe, Kemp, Mason and the Doc are underrated here.

And Carter, AI, Wilkins are overated. If Carter has 50", then his head would be 8 inches above the rim...how is it possible?

    **************************************

    Vertical's

    Dunkers

vince carter - 50'' (u seen "the dunk" he did in rucker game...an alley-oop-windmill...his head was above the rim, so he must have 50'' or so, go figure)

    eddie robinson 47''

dee brown - 44'' (in his prime)

    steve francis - 43''

    antonio mcdyess - 42''

    allen iverson - 41''

shawn kemp - 40'' (in his prime)

    rex chapman - 39''

    kobe bryant - 38''

    desmond mason - 38''

    shaquille o'neal - 32''

    lamar odom - 32''

    karl malone - 28''

    retired Dunkers

    dominique wilkins - 50''

    michael jordan - 48''

    spud webb - 46''

    harold miner - 44''

    julius erving - 41''

    larry nance - 40''

    ralph sampson - 36''

    magic johnson - 30''

    non - Dunkers

kadour ziani - 56'' (french exhibition dunker)

    reggie thompson - 53'' (jumpsoles)

michael wilson - 51'' (harlem globetrotters)

    randy moss - 51'' (nfl)

    ronnie fields - 48'' (cba)

    melvin levett - 45''

    javon kearse - 40'' (nfl)

spud webb's vertical has to be more than 46 inches. For a 5'7" guy to do a 360, it must take some amazing hang time for him to pull it off. I have a clip from the time he won the dunk championship, and I swear, the space between the bottom of his shoe and the ground (at the peak of his jump) is more than his body height.

I think Francis' is a bit higher. I remeber when he and Carter were going at each other in the Dunk Champ. it was around 46" or 47' at least.

Remember, vert is measured by taking one full step and jumping, not by a running start. Francis' 43" vertical is about right by all accounts.

Vince Carter averaged between 36-38 inches in that dunk contest. Its rare for a person to have a 50 inch vertical. My vertical in high school was measured at 32 inches. I touched a mark 10'4" my junior year. We had a guy that touched a mark 10'11". Last I heard he was running track at LSU.

There is no way in hell Vince has a 50 inch vert. It is possible however that he can jump 50 inches off of a running start. I remember hearing Antonio McDyess had a 42 inch vert and a 48 inch 2 step vert. That's sick for a guy with his size.

Clyde once dunked on a 12' goal, so I would imagine he is up there at 40+ even though he is not listed.

Carter can really leap with only one or two steps...as evidenced by his dunk from beneath the backboard during the contest...but there are other guys who can do pretty much the same.

However on a running jump, no one is in his league; everyone in the game admits this much. He has jumped over, lest we forget, two 7-footers in game action. On many of his more flashy dunks, he isn't looking to get as far off the ground as possible...take the between the legs one...as that would actually make the dunk much harder, in terms of angle. But when he wants to do just sheer height, and when he has a few steps...he's simply far and away the best. I have often seen his head well above the rim...

I'd be interested to see Amare's vertical. I'd guess that it's probably identical to McDyess.

There was a guy who played for Memphis State, now Memphis, in 1995-1996 who had a legit 51" verticle. His name was Micheal Williams. He was around 6'6" and he was an awesome dunker.

David Thompson of North Carolina St and the Denver Nuggets should be on this list. Talk about genetics, his niece was the first college female basketball player to dunk in a game. I forgot her name but she played for North Carolina.

Edit: Her name was Charlotte Smith and she did it 1994.

There's no doubt his running jump is unbelievable. Look at what he did to poor 7-5 Frederich Weis (a first round pick of the Knicks who has never suited up for them) in the 1996 Olympics.

I'd be interested in TMac's vertical. I wouldn't put too much stock into that list, though. I'm sure Harold Minor was well up there, and look what he became.

I have an Old Basketball card that says Clyde had a 43 inch vert.

    Hey speedball,

It looks a lot more impressive if you use the metric system:

    45.72 cm!

My own high jump was an astounding 60 cm!

    Take that Vince Carter! :p

I had between a 38-40" veritical in college but unfortunately I'm only 5'6" with 6'7" reach. Yes, I have arms that would put Kevin Willis to shame.:(
