we haven't had one of these in several weeks it seems. is manny on hiatus or something? anyways.... the black lips - let it bloom, los valientes del mundo nuevo... these guys are so freaking awesome it's almost indescribable. garange punk/pop/blues played by a bunch of kids known to vomit, piss, get naked, and fight on stage. absolutely love them, and they haven't left my cd player in a month. medeski, martin, and wood - let's go everywhere, combustication... let's go everywhere is actually a kid's album (which although it didn't say so on the album would've been pretty evident by the track titles... ) but they got some pretty solid stuff on there - funky, bluesy, jazzy. combustication is a lot more jazz and a lot more experimental... definitely a mood album. ryan adams and the cardinals - follow the lights... i guess this is an EP seeing as though it only has about 3 originals on it (7 songs total), but this is just another great album in a long, long line of great albums by this guy. their cover of alice in chains "down in a hole" is one of the best covers i've ever heard. black crowes - warpaint.... black crowes come back strong with a vengence after a 7 year hiatus between albums. straight up southern, bluesy rock with a their ever-present psychedelic and folksy undertones. very solid effort by the brothers robinson and company, and the addition of luther dickinson on lead guitar (of the north mississippi all stars) is proving to be an excellent addition... NMAS put on a great show fri. night, btw. neil young - greatest hits album... forget which one this is, but i needed a neil fix when i was in austin last month and just went with one of his more solid greatest hits albums. it's neil, it's awesome. dead confederate - st.... band i've been meaning to check out for a few months now (and which i apparently missed a free dayshow on saturday at SXSW :mad). another band in the southern/bluesy/pyschedelic (i guess) mold which i'm clearly a huge fan of. definitely some my morning jacket and drive by truckers in there... have only listened to it once and definitely need to spin it a few more times as the first go round left me wanting a little more. eager to hear their new stuff since apparently they've changed their sound up a little. the alarmists - sampler CD i got from their dayshow saturday during SXSW.... really enjoyed their brief set i caught saturday afternoon. out of minneapolis, pretty much straight indie rock; heard some kingls of leon, some of the who, some u2... the album didn't translate as well as the show, but they have some rock in 'em ,that's for sure. also been jamming my typical mix of widespread panic, rolling stones, zeppelin, derek and the dominos, etc., etc. i will go ahead and say that the my morning jacket show i caught last week was easily one of the best shows i've seen in a long time. just an amazing band with an amazing lead singer. it was their 1st time playing any of their new songs and we all came away impressed and with our jaws on the floor. music rules.
Times New Viking - Rip It Off Fatal Flying Guillotines - Quantum F***ing (A Fictitious Real Life Account of Young Love In the Streets) The Dirtbombs - We Have You Surrounded This one has been a favorite of mine for a few months. Jay Reatard - Blood Visions
the cure - disentegration for some reason i've come back to this album and been playing it frequently for weeks. UNKLE - war stories this one has been steadily played as well
The Roots - The Tipping Point (Amazing album. I've had it about 2 years, but I'm just listening to it now and WOW. This is the first hip hop band I've listened to and the music is superb. Love the instruments, love the MC Black Thoughts' wordplay. Great all around.) The Roots - Things Fall Apart (I bought this album for one song in particular called The Next Movement. It's cool, I'm listening to The Tipping Point much more though.) Kanye West - College Dropout (sparingly listening to atm, will listen more after I'm done going through The Roots' albums)
Warpaint-The Black Crowes Sticks and Stones-moe. Cassadega-Bright Eyes Vampire Weekend-Vampire Weekend Live from New Jersey-Pete Yorn The Craft-Blackalicious Asleep at Heaven's Gate-Rogue Wave Looking forward to the new Counting Crows next week.
Black Crowes - Warpaint Counting Crows - Saturday nights and Sunday Mornings (It leaked and its great) R.E.M. - Accelerate (Sounds like 1985 all over again)
Thin Lizzy "Live and Dangerous" Richard Hell "Blank Generation" The Damned "Damned Damned Damned" The Cars "Panorama" Motorhead "No Sleep 'til Hammersmith" The Cult "Born Into This"
On a whim I got the new Black Crowes album, too. I haven't listened to any news music from them in a long, long time. It's pretty good. My favorite album at the moment is Goldfrapp's "Seventh Tree." Just a beautiful, beautiful album. I am also digging the new REM album, "Accelerate," as well as the new one by Black Mountain, "In the Future." REM's album has much crisper melodies and more energy than the last few. Black Mountain is one of the coolest bands out right now. They are hard to describe. There's a little bit of the Velvet Underground, a little bit of Zeppelin and lot of druggy mood and menace. Old music I'm listening to: Billie Holiday, Joe Jackson and the Flaming Lips.
Boys Noize - Oi Oi Oi ---- For any fan of electronic music, this is a must. One of the best albums of the last several years. LCD Soundsystem - Sounds of Silver --- Been listening to it for a while now and it just keeps getting better IAMX - The Alternative --- The most recent album from Chris Corner, the mastermind behind the Sneaker Pimps. Absolutely brilliant stuff.
I gotta say that I've never really listened to my morning jacket, but they will be at Coachella when I go next month and based on word of mouth I'm gonna check them out. Any suggestions on what I should check out from their collection beforehand? Based on your posts I think you and I have similar taste in music, so I'm gonna check out some of the other stuff you listed. You should definitely check out my suggestions if you aren't familiar with them...all really really good. Music is life!
This is not normally a great place to start, but their live album "Okonokos" is incredible. It's seriously one of the best live albums I've heard.
