A buddy of mine called me earlier from the ATL. He said Max was arrested in Atlanta today...I don't know all the details but it was something along the lines of assaulting his teenage son and possession of something. I guess some things never change.
I hope it's not true, but it certainly could sound correct. Too bad. Madd Maxx coulda been a champeen (beyond the ring and a half, of course).
damn! assaulting his son? that's awful!!! i didn't know he had a teenage son. i guess none of it surprises me...so much wasted talent...what a shame.
You dont remember his son? During the trophy presentation after Game 7 of the Knicks, he was the cute little boy that Mario Elie was holding. Ya know, the one that kept wanting to touch the trophy????? lol He looked just like his dad.
I saw a special a couple years ago that had his son asking Vernon to acknowldge him. I guess his son went looking for him.
oh my gosh!! that's right!! as soon as you said that, i knew exactly what you were talking about! i remember he had a stillborn daughter and he wrote her name on his shoes each night....
Yeah I remember that too. I dont think Vernon was a bad guy necessarily. He just had so many demons. More than he could deal with. Didnt he get disciplined by the league for drugs when he played for San Antonio?
Anyone who watched the games Sunday on ESPN Classic got a huge glimpse of what kind of a player Max was. He was an amazing talent. Sorry to hear about this.
i've posted this here a few times before, but here goes again... a friend of a friend knew scott brooks real well...scott used to say, "vernon maxwell would be the best player in the league if he could manage just 5 hours of sleep per night." on the road, vernon wouldn't go back to the hotel...they wouldn't see him all night until he showed up the next day at the shootaround.
I think you hit the nail on the head. I had the fortune of meeting Max several times in San Antonio. He used to frequent a Jazz bar there and I would have to say he was one of the most cordial ballplayers I have ever meet. Nothing like his rep in fact quite the opposite. We had a drink together and we talked about that Rockets Championship and how that was a great year. Actually I did most of the talking but he listened very patiently to a fan and he genuinely thanked me when I told him he was one of my favorite players almost as if he was embarrassed to take the compliment. I thought he was as tenacious a player on the courtas there was. So anyway nothing else explains his off the court behaviour to me except that perhaps he does have alot of demons... Anyway I am still grateful for what he brought to the Rockets in that championship year. He was a big part of it and I hope he gets his act straight.
I think KPRC (Channel 2)- NBC affiliate reads the posts on Clutchcity.net for their sports stories. They mentioned the Vernon Maxwell arrest (He had over an ounce of mar1juana & the assault on his 16-year old was confirmed also). They also mentioned in passing the post from WindandSea about Yao's ankle injury.
They just showed a mug shot of him taken today. He didn't look to happy. Still surprised there hasn't been any news on any sites.
Aw man, I love Maxwell. Hate to hear what he is going through again. Some people are always in the wrong place at the wrong time! He makes some bad decisions, but no ones perfect. Whatever he had in his possesion, there is no excuse for however. I do give him the benefit of the doubt with his son, some call it assault some call it discipline. We will never know what really happened. What I do know is teenage sons can challenge their fathers from time to time, and sometime you have to kick their @ss to let them know who's in charge... Either way he'll be in my prayers, you can never have to many of those.....
Wow I am glad Vernon Maxwell still has such a loyal following. I agree with most of you that Vernon Maxwell would not sit a back seat to any of the best shooting guards in the NBA, if only he had a decent coach in his life that would slap some sense into the guy. I just hope he gets some help and don't end up on the news like Tupac.
I've stated earlier that Max was one of the keys to the Rox success against the Bulls. MJ was scared to death of Max. Rox went 5-1 vs Bulls during their first championship run. Max was a really nice guy during his Rox run.
