    More? on JVG

This from BBS fav Peter Vecsey's column today:

I knew Jeff Van Gundy had no desire to coach the Cavaliers when he leaked the Knicks had given permission (to Gordon Gund) to interview him. I knew the Hornets and Raptors had expressed zero interest in interviewing Van Gundy when he leaked his lack of interest in them.

When the calculating Van Gundy truly has designs on a team (and the feeling by management is mutual), the media will be the last to find out. Then again, sources say should Houston's Rudy Tomjanovich be pushed upstairs, that's the job Van Gundy covets.

Owner Les Alexander - convinced his Rockets underachieved- may use his coach's bout with cancer as a convenient excuse to make a move. That is, if insurance will cover the remaining two-year, $12M obligation.

So, is this in the cards? NY writers keep writing Rudy out and JVG in.

Sounds like Houston is a pretty desirable place for a coach to go. I guess if Rudy decides to call it quits we probably have our pick of the litter. Coaches will be lining up.

Vescey is just repeating what he read in the NJ Star Ledger which made all the same points a few weeks ago.

To this day, VG is not on record with anyone about the Houston job and his criteria for not considering the NO job, would seem to rule him out here (doesn't want to move his family far south; does not want to work for a team if the coach is dismissed for questionable reasons (JVG is on record as saying that Rudy deserves to stay on)).

Also, you have to take ANYTHING Vescey says with a grain of salt. He is like Nostradomus, but with a worse track record.

I don't think the Rockets operate this way. I think something more along the lines of JVG is brought in here to assist Rudy, assistant head coach in charge of defense, and annointed the future head coach is more likely to happen if something is changed on the coaching staff.

I don't think so....Rudy will not want an assistant coach who is maybe as good as him...

And Jeff would not want to work under someone else.

    But I would like JVG.

So how is he? How is he a good coach? What are his strengths and weaknesses as a coach???????

I don't see this ever happening. Would never happen. Why would JVG want to be an assistant when several teams are pursuing them as their HC?

It probably won't happen because Vecsey said it would (reminds me of the SI cover jinx), but I sure wouldn't mind. I haven't really considered whether he would fit us or not, but Van Gundy is my favorite coach. I'm not a Rudy hater at all, but I'd still be in heaven if we hired JVG.

Tell me why Jeff Van Gundy is your favorite coach.

I know he's a good coach...but how is he good?

Can he create an offense that is designed for Yao Ming and Steve Francis???

    And can he discipline them?

    Is he a good teacher?

I think this is an unfair charecterizartion of Rudy. You can argue he has done a good or bad job, but I can't immagine he wants anything other than the best for the Rockets.

    Well maybe...

Of course he wants the best for the Rockets organization.....for 3 decades...

But I don't understand why he has these 3 horrible incompetent assistant coaches.......they should be replaced...it is to improve the Rockets.

First thing you habe to know about JVG is that he's primary goal is to stress defense. He's a good teacher and motivator and he really likes a challenge especially when you have a young core talented ballclub but underachiever team likes the Rocket. The backourt of Steve and cat will differ to the Big man and the offence will come along the way.

Legitimate point. That's why I don't see him coming here although I'd like to see him on the sidelines.

The only other scenario is if Rudy would volunteer to step down and if Rudy and CD wanted to bring in JVG.

What else is Jeff going to say? Its not like he is going to come out and openly admit that he wants to Rockets jobs, especially with Rudy still here. Also, I don't buy this whole bit about not wanting to move to the south. Its probably some excuse he just gave for not accepting the New Orleans job.

Whatever Jeff says or doesn't say, he is just blowing smoke. My guess is that Rudy will be back next year but will be gone the year after.

Jeff Van Gundy "Holding Out" for Rockets, Peter Vecsey Reports!

I was watching ABC13 on Friday news at 6 and Bob Allen reported that Peter Vecsey, the NBA's ultimate Insider, reported that he thinks Jeff Van Gundy is holding out on interviews and other things hoping that the Rockets situation with Rudy T would change and would make him eligible for the Rockets Head Coaching Job. I don't know if anyone else saw that, but I have been trying for over an hour on the internet trying to find a hard copy of that report but couldn't. Those who have been watching the NBA throughout the season and playoffs on TNT, where Jeff Van Gundy works with Mike Fratello and Marv Albert, know that Van Gundy has been going out of his way sometimes to praise Yao Ming and the Rockets Organization as if attempting to drop hints. He is definitley the most sought after coach in the league. Boy would I luv to have him here!! :(

he complimented yao in his first game against dallas. that was it. he hasn't gone out of his way to compliment yao. and didn't van gundy pick amare for rookie of the year on tv?

anyway, aside from all that, jeff van gundy is the best defensive coach the rockets could get.

Clutch said it perfectly: This is how rumors get started.

This was first reported by the NJ Star Ledger (who were speculating). It was then picked up by Hoopsworld.com (who added their own twist to the story (by saying Van Gundy himself stated that he was interested in Houston, which is not true). Then Vescey picked it up and ran with it (as only Vescey can). Now Bob Allen.

I would not be suprised at all to see a story about this pop up in the Chronicle in a few days.

    All false hope ............;)
