This seems very strange, given how hostile to religion the show has seemed to be in its later seasons.

 

I remember Lovejoy taking a jab at Catholics. I remember also where Homer met God and they implied Jesus had a breakdown (I thought that was very Family Guy of them since they never did that before).

 

I think the Simpsons became more hostile towards religion because soceity became more accepting. In the beginning, people were appalled Bart was talking back to his paretns, speaking out against religion would have been suicide. We live in a soceity now that is mor secular, and has shows like family guy blasting religion all the time, so it's more acceptable to do.

 

i think homer took the "bullet" for him. i remember the slowmo dive!

 

Bart was kicked out of Springfield Elementary for the bazillionth time, and was sent to a Catholic school. And yes both Bart and Homer converted...but I can't remember what happened at the end and can't remember if it's one of those episodes where the story doesn't exist (like Skinner not being Skinner). Plus, you can't exactly convert to Catholicism on a whim anyways, so the whole idea they could convert w/o Marge knowing or approving seems pretty silly.

 

The episode you're probably thinking of is when Flanders tries to baptize the Simpson children. Homer took the dive and was baptized a Flanders. But at the time they were attending a Protestant church.
