I can't wait to hear the song "Hump". "Might as well HUMP! Go ahead and Hump!" http://www.contactmusic.com/news.nsf/article/van halen teams up with p*rn director_1003716 VAN HALEN TEAMS UP WITH p*rn DIRECTOR Legendary guitarist EDDIE VAN HALEN has signed a deal to supply two original songs for the soundtrack to director MICHAEL NINN's latest p*rn project. The WHEN IT'S LOVE hitmaker is the first famous rock star to record new material especially for an adult movie, and new tunes RISE and CATHERINE will feature in SACRED SIN, reports PageSix.com. And Van Halen is not concerned about being criticised for promoting p*rnography: "I'm working with a friend - very simple. I like his work. "Michael Ninn is like (STEVEN) SPIELBERG to me: the imagery, the way he makes things look, just sensual."
Now if a p*rn director cant make you feel hard, you know there is something wrong with him. Now I dont know if the anology is valid. It's insulting to both directors.
I haven't cared about VH since DLR left. That being said, here's my wish: Eddie in the studio, sans the band just jammin' a low-budge instrumental type something. For p*rn? Fine. I remember, sometime in the 80's he did a inst. project w/ Brain May that showed such promise. I still believe, as a musician, he could be (re)important on his on. If he stopped worrying about the band, the legend, Hagar, DLR, Alex and stayed focused for 2 days, he could follow through on the guitar god promise. I'm not knocking his catalog by any means, great, great albums...but I believe he could expand. That being said, music for p*rn is a cool idea. They could both use the work.
p*rn is generally so bad in that it caters to such a lowbrow audience, and it could be so beautiful. It seems like with downloadable movies there could be a real market for quality p*rn ( and I'll define that as something you and your wife or girlfriend might both enjoy) Maybe adding some real music is a step in the right direction. I was looking around on Soulseek the other day and a guy had a whole CD of 70's p*rn music posted. It was hilarious for about a minute, then it got boring.
Ding! Ding! Ding! We have a winner! EVH: "I'm working with a friend".....yeeeah RIIIIIGHT!!! MUAHAHAHAHAH!!!!!!
anyone here think that Van Halen will be remembered much more for the band drama than the music? Yes. Eddie Van Halen can shred on the guitar. I get it. Yes. Yes. I understand. No, really, i get it. Yes. That is shredding guitar. And he plays it. Yes indeed. No one was doing it quite like that before he did. Indeed. Shredding. Quite. But man, has anyone noticed how many other shredding guitar players there are ever since transistor amps, effects, pedals and treble-y guitars became cheap and accessible? And how maybe that stylr of guitar playing, at one point unique and impressive, is now omnipresent and FREAKING UNLISTENABLE? Maybe it is just me, and maybe i have donated too many pieces of my nervous system to people attempting to shred like Eddie in music stores (they need to have vending machines for guitar strings and picks and cables and straps outisde guitar stores, like soda machines, so you don't actually have to go into the store. I'd pay double.) But I can not take it, and even some of his most acclaimed work gets my goat, probably after decades of bastardization. Not just by kids, but big bands - like the bands who swam in Van Halen's wake might have ruined the real band. Yes, yes yes, their songs are nice. Hot For Teacher, all that other stuff. But in the end, how many of us will care? i am thinking that a small fraction of people will care considering their former stature as legends, innovators and untouchably fun. They lost their sense of fun with DLR, and they have not aged well.
I agree with CBFC, and I feel exactly the same way about Guns and Roses. They only have themselves to blame for their demise.
"How hard is it to be a p0rn director? WHat do you have to do or say? 'Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand... SUCK IT...!!' " - Dave Attell
Interesting take, CBFC. Can't say I don't agree with a lot of it. Here's mine: Yes, EVH is very fast and doesn't play with a whole lot of soul. His solos are all pretty much the same. He uses the same 2 or 3 tricks in all of them, like tapping (which is actually so easy that even I can do it), pick harmonics, and ending half of them with the same penatonic (sp?) scale on the same high E-string, bending the last note. But... No one was doing that kind of thing before him. IMO, in this day and age, anyone who pioneers a unique style of playing, no matter how cheesy it may be now, deserves to be mentioned when talking about the greatest players ever. Plus, let's forget about his redundant solos for a minute. Some of his riffs are among the most recognizable riffs in the history of rock. Running with the Devil, Aint Talkin' Bout Love, Mean Streets, Beaufiful Girls, The Cradle Will Rock, Hot For Teacher, and of course my personal favorite.....Unchained. You'll notice I didn't list any from the non-DLR eras, because I hate it all. Answering your question, I will care. But that's only because I don't consider the Hagar era "Van Halen". When I think of Van Halen, I think of Dave, Eddie, Alex and Michael. That's it. Van Halen died the day DLR left. EDIT: I heard that EVH went to Dimebag Darrell's funeral and buried the actual guitar used on the cover of VH's first album with Dimebag. Apparently, Dimebag idolized Eddie and was the reason he started playing in the first place. And Eddie was a big Pantera fan. Anyone know if this is true?
i agree, i don't know how great it would be but i'd love to hear it. i still think a lot of DLR era van halen is some of the best music i've ever heard, particularly fair warning. eddie just wrote some great riffs that created great songs and to me his playing isn't just about being able to "shred", there are guys who play faster, but i do think he adds some "soul", or whatever you want to call it, to the speed.
Yes, CBFC, of course you're right. But it's like looking at Vader: You know he's in there somewhere. You can sense under the bs, there must be add'l untapped greatness. But maybe that's just nostalagic longing, of a galaxy far, far away, before EV was ...CGI.
