I hope he is just trying to increase the Rockets offer: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A21238-2003Jun5.html By Steve Wyche Washington Post Staff Writer Friday, June 6, 2003; Page D04 SAN ANTONIO, June 5 -- Although he is weighing an offer to be the next coach of the Rockets, Jeff Van Gundy told reporters today in Houston that he interviewed with the Washington Wizards "for a good length of time" Wednesday about their vacant coaching and president of basketball operations positions. "Yesterday I spoke to the Wizards for a good length of time," said Van Gundy, a former New York Knicks coach who is now a broadcaster for TNT. "We'll just wait and see how everything works out." While Van Gundy and the Rockets have not reached terms on a contract, negotiations are believed to be underway. Today, team officials took him and his family house hunting and on a tour of area schools and team facilities. Van Gundy said he likes the situation in Houston, with the possibility to coach guards Steve Francis and Cuttino Mobley and center Yao Ming. "I was talking to somebody I really trust in basketball," Van Gundy told the Associated Press. "He said the biggest plus about Houston is every day Yao Ming wakes up, he's 7-foot-5. "Ain't that the truth." The New York Times first reported today that Van Gundy had talked to the Wizards. The club recently pursued Larry Brown about holding the dual roles but Brown opted to coach the Detroit Pistons after Rick Carlisle was fired. The Wizards have spoken with Carlisle's agent about setting up an interview for the coaching job. A league source said Washington also has contacted former Portland Trail Blazers coach Mike Dunleavy about the coaching job. If Van Gundy declines the Rockets' job, Houston apparently would try to hire Dunleavy, who has already interviewed there. "As we all know when we've moved, it's a major decision in your life and a lot of things go into it," Van Gundy said. "So I'm obviously going to take my time and try to make the right decision for me and my family." Wizards officials have maintained the team does not plan to hire a coach until naming a president of basketball operations. The Wizards have interviewed former Maryland star Len Elmore for that job and are believed to have spoken to others
