As I watch this guy I become more and more impressed with his basketball mind. His biggest challenge will be getting the players to buy into it. That will be his real challenge. We'll see how he does... for now the results are not so good but it is very early.

Oh and this is coming from someone who thought that it was a big mistake to replace Rudy with JVG and at least wanted Brown. I still feel it was a mistake but not a big one anymore.

I don't think there will be any "buying" by any stretch of the imagination. Either they get with the program or they get out of town. (with the exception of Yao Ming)

Obviously I was a huge Brown guy, and definitely saw/see JVG as a concession prize...still do, but that doesn't mean that he won't be successfull. I just thought that it was incredible that the best coach I've ever seen was suddenly available and wanted to come here, and am still bitter that we hedged on getting him, probably over $...Especially when, ironically, I had just started a thread a week or so before that stating that if I could have any coach to guide the Rockets it would be Brown...It seemed like destiny for a while there...oh well, JVG will bring some important elements.

OMR, haven't seen you around for quite awhile.

My expectations for this season are getting greater everyday. I read more and more articles about the team. Supposedly there is no way the Rockets will miss the post season. God, I hope so.

If you browse around the site, you can also found a section about the challenges new coaches face, below if for Van Gundy:

    Jeff Van Gundy, Houston Rockets
Career record: 248-172 in seven seasons
    Coaching stops: New York
Outlook: Van Gundy, who hasn't coached since resigning from the Knicks after 19 games into the 2001-02 season, knows what it's like to replace a respected coach. In New York, Van Gundy stepped in for Don Nelson in the middle of the 1995 season. In Houston, he steps in for Rudy Tomjanovich. Expect the Rockets to play tough defense and run the offense through the post (Hello, Yao), trademarks of Van Gundy's Knicks teams

Actually this is not saying much in my opinion as we all know this already. Let's hope he's up to expectation and we fans give him enough time to do his job.

Well, I dont know if I'll give him one of the best X's and O's guys. Although I hope he proves me wrong. Its kinda like the Phil Jackson being one of the greatest coach's thing. Im not convince on the so-called Zen Master until he takes a mediocre team to the finals. As Van Gundy, he may be slightly hyped up because he started his coaching career in the HYPE CAPITAL of the world (NEW YORK) . I think it remains to be seen with him. If he can get these Rockets to play, then i'll give him his props...

The "Little General" will make a great coach one day.

Lucky the team that gets him, his 2nd stint.

Well...Larry Brown was top 3 for like every single category.

Pistons have lost at least 2 games so far too.

    I don't know...it will take some time!

Anybody who can do what he did with such mediocre talent that the management of the Knicks gave him to work with, is one of the best coaches around. Period.

judging from the manager's polls, larry brown is either really good or over-rated... i think it's the latter. i think it will become evident that replacing rick carlisle was a mistake. btw, i think carlisle was snubbed.

as for van grundy. he's definitely got his work cut out for him. i'll wait till the season starts before i make an evaluation. i like what i've heard so far, but it still remains to be seen if he can pull this team together. but i'm confident the little man is capable of big things.

Gundy and brown are in the same boat. I read an article and it said Brown was very upset that the pistons have not gotten their offense going yet. Even if you have the best coach ever you still have to be able to have players that can shoot.

For the Record that Knicks team was not that bad. Also I am not one to slam the East, because all basketball players whether their in the East or West get paycheck's big and small (ask Allan Houston). And we all know to make it to the playoffs in the East is not such a daunting task. Did he make that team play well? Yes.. Was any other team in the East much more talented than the Knicks? There were few, at the most. I hope he is the coach that people where he was coaching say he is. Has it been proven in my eyes? Nope not yet. Like I said him and Phil Jackson are in the same boat as far as I am concerned. "OVER RATED" However I think he is the type coach that the current Rockets need. Prove me wrong JVG...

Rudy T. was also a great X's and O's coach, but the players are the ones that must buy into the theory and are the ones that must impliment this into building and creating a winning formula.

Good luck getting through some of the cosmic bunny holes on this team JVG.
