I know he's older than dirt, but he can still dish the assists out. Depending on how James works out & whether he gets traded, would you consider signing him for the Veteran's Minimum next year? Just a thought.

    The Oregonian

If the Blazers elect not to re-sign Abdur-Rahim, Van Exel and Stoudamire -- which is likely -- they will save $39 million in salaries. But Nash said he will explore sign-and-trade agreements at the end of the season that could generate some return.

Van Exel reiterated on Wednesday that he will retire at the end of the season, saying he would only continue playing if it was the perfect situation, which for him includes Houston and Miami. He has one year left on his contract, but it doesn't become guaranteed until Jan. 10, 2006, meaning a team that wanted to get under the salary cap could trade nearly $12 million in contracts to the Blazers in return for Van Exel. That team could then cut him before Jan. 10.

"I suspect that contract will be one that will be desired by teams in the offseason," Nash said.

Personally, we'd have to be pretty desperate at the PG situation for me to consider picking up Van Exel. I really doubt he'd settle for the vet's minimum. I can see why he'd like to play for us though, since he lives here.

Are we just a retirement home hotbed? Van Exel, just retire in Pasadena and get it over with.

It's obvious that he wants to play for a serious contender. Yao & TMac and Shaq & Wade are easily the best inside-outside duos next season. It's a win win situation for NVE in either case.

Considering that NVE is really more of a hybrid 1/2 and we're talking about 12 million worth of expiring contract...bring him on IF the deal is right. He's a rotation player, then lots of caproom.

If NVE would play for cheap, then I would pick him up. Why not?

Depending on how the Sura/James combo works out, I wouldnt mind trying to get NVE. He can still shoot and drive the lane. Plus he is usually a pretty clutch player. If James doenst work out (i hope he does) we could make a run at Van Exel for the right price.

If NVE wanted to come and play some backup minutes.....I dont mind...as long as it is for the vet's minimum.

    He is worth that much

    easily

hell..he is still better than Mooch at this time...but he better know that Sura and James get minutes before he does..(if we still have Bob and Mike next year)

NVE has a nasty streak in him that can really toughen up the Rockets. However, he can also be a cancer in the locker room if the chemistry isn't right (Cancun anyone?).

I think that the model for the rockets to make a championship dynasty is to:

    (1) persuade Yao to take a bit less than the maximum.

    (2) hire a third "galactico" - a stud power forward with good rebounding (top 10 in league at the position say. e.g. Carlos Boozer).

    (3) fill the rest of the roster with vets playing for the minimum, and a ring.

As long as the chemistry is right (if he is prepared to play for vet minimum this is more likely), then this is absolutely the kind of guy that the Rockets should be going for.

I hope Deke carries on next year.

Why nobody suggested Tmac to take less than 20 million a year? He was the guy who desperately wanted to be here.

    T-mac's a top 5 player, Yao is not..yet (hoping).

    There's a difference. :)

That would pretty much ensure that Yao wave sayonara.

Yao might do it if it allowed them to hire someone who would push the rockets up to championship dynasty level.

Yao is almost certainly the player for whom the ratio of endorsements/salary is highest in the league (and will have the highest ratio of the non-rookie contracts as well) so it makes more sense for him than for anyone else.

Although a lot of money comes off the books next year, this is presumably too late to hire someone in parallel with Yao's contract extension. Pity.

It is easy to imagine this being the most economically rational behavior for all parties. But human relations are not always rational. And I doubt David Stern would be happy..

Dude, the people to whom Yao's countrymen most happily waved the Chinese equivalent of goodbye were those who used the word sayonara. Trust me, you won't catch that word passing his lips.
