here's an update to an earlier post. the players in orange represent this week's crop of commitments. what kind of week has it been for the 'Horns? they lost a commitment: the 20th-ranked DT in the nation jumped ship to go to TCU. who did the 'Horns replace him with? rodrique wright of alief hastings, the #1-ranked DT in the nation. put him together with marco martin [#4] and chase pittman [#7], and you've got 3 of the top 7 DT's in the nation headed for austin [not to mention brian pickryl, the #2-ranked DE in the nation!]. this is a positional summary of the way UT's recruiting is shaping up. the only players I'm listing are players who have either verbally commited to Texas or have listed their interest in Texas as being High. ** all rankings are national ** commitments: justin blalock - 1st ranked OG rodrique wright - 1st ranked DT brian pickryl - 2nd ranked DE marquis johnson - 3rd ranked WR albert hardy - 4th ranked FB marco martin - 4th ranked DT aaron harris - 4th ranked ILB neale tweedie - 4th ranked OG selvin young - 6th ranked RB garnet smith - 6th ranked OLB david thomas - 7th ranked TE chase pittman - 7th ranked DT sonny davis - 1st ranked juco DT billy don malone - 19th ranked pro-style QB matthew melton - 22nd ranked S brett valdez - 23rd ranked OG tully janszen - 27th ranked DT lyle sendlein - 29th ranked DT marcus myers - 31st ranked OLB brian robison - 40th ranked ILB dustin miksch - 82nd ranked WR remember, these are commitments, and these rankings are national. now, for those who list their interest in Texas as being high: marvin byrdsong - 2nd ranked OLB a.j. nicholson - 3rd ranked ILB micheal williams - 8th ranked DE robert timmons - 20th ranked WR [1st in TX] rufus alexander - 21st ranked OLB ricky wilson - 42nd ranked ATH again, the rankings [unless otherwise noted] are national, and the interest is high. for most of these players, indicating an interest level of "high" means that the school is probably in their final 2. a few points of interest: - anybody notice anything about the D-Line coming to Texas? the Longhorns may never be run on again. the 2nd-ranked DE is committed. the top-ranked DT is committed, the 4th-ranked DT is committed. you've still got the 7th-ranked DT and the top-ranked juco DT committed. and then, the 8th-ranked DE is another strong possibility. that could get scary. and, of course, the wait continues to hear about VINCENT YOUNG, who is the new #1-ranked player in the nation per his playoff hijinks and who is basically trying to choose between UT and Miami, with Arkansas having an outside shot. this is the first year I've followed recruiting this closely, but. . . if Vincent Young comes to Texas, I think this would have to outrank the '99 class [with simms and redding]. currently, Texas has 11 commitments from players on the National Top 100. the school with the next most? Tennessee with 5. what will follow next will be the onslaught of Mr. February catcalls and Mack Brown digs, but I don't give two bits about a frickin' piss! HOOK THEM, Mack!
you figure the losses will be at neb, k st., the ou game and ? . . . all I can say is, if he gets Vincent Young and the rest of this class and doesn't win a National Title. . .
I predict 9-3 at worst with losses to Nebraska, Oklahoma, and Kansas State or North Carolina. If A&M can win at Kansas State, I like our odds next year. This year Mack got over his hump of an early season collapse but that could happen next year at North Carolina. Tech may give us a scare but not likely. [edit]
I'll go on record with a 10-2 prediction for 2002. UT will win the national title in 2004, following the 2003 season. remember this post!
If they get Young, I make him the starter right away. That's how little confidence I have in Simms. chievous, where do you get this info? I appreciate the info, but why not re-direct some of that energy to the basketball team? They're much funner to root for, IMO. I want basketball to take over at Texas, because I just know all the good ole boys don't want to go see all the bruthas from the playgrounds hoop it up. Not to mention they're a pretty darn exciting team to watch, with a great style of play. I just got tickets to the OSU and Kansas games, and RM95 and shanna owe me 16 bucks each for both tickets. Can't beat that.
thefreak, I get most of my info from rivals100.com. as far as I know, it's pretty much the be-all, end-all resource for high school recruiting info. and as far as 'Horns b-ball goes. . . if I ever make good on my intention to eventually go to school at UT to get some type of graduate degree, I'll definitely fall into the fold on rooting for them. until then, though, when it comes to college basketball, I support a different kind of orange: the syracuse orangemen. I've been pulling for them since keith smart's bogus jumper killed them in '87. it doesn't make any sense since I grew up in houston, but that's where my college basketball allegiance lies. however, now that t.j. ford is at UT, that does make me more interested in the squad. I've got to keep it real for all my fort bend/sugarland homies. by the way, one article I read indicates that Young may want to play 2 sports in college, a la charlie ward or ronald curry or julius peppers. maybe you'll get to root for Young on both the UT football and basketball squads.
rocketman95, you have to refresh my memory. When did Mack go 8-4 with UT??? I'm very naive. As far as recruiting, this year, Mack gets who he wants when he wants. He's dominating Stoops in that aspect, but head to head on the playing field, Stoops is 2-1. Pretty soon, Mack will have too much talent to win only 9 or ten games. This year, UT was one decent qb from being in the Rose Bowl. You graduated from SWT, R95? Is that correct?
Screw that. They better win. For this year, if they lose to UW, I consider the year a disappointment.
When did Mack Brown ever win a conference championship? A national championship? He's never had less than three losses at UT, so according to your theory, he's going to lose the Washington game. This was the first year (in many) that we went through the non-conference schedule without a loss. We have a tough trip to UNC, plus tough trips to Manhattan, Lubbock (a team who lost to 3 top 10 schools this year...plus Kansas-ouch Drewdog), Dallas (where we've looked absolutely lost the past two years), and Lincoln (where we stopped their huge streak, and I don't think they've lost since. I'll be surprised if we go better than 8-4, and will be very happy with 9-3, and a pig in **** if we go 10-2. Yup, 1999, BS in Applied Sociology. Your point?
A Train, do you care to bet on this season. Ill put 20 bucks down that were in a new years or better bowl This class rules, and to be honest if we play up to our potential see us in the big game this yr-i know its a big if.
