Utah Jazz radio play-by-play guy David Locke (who is really good) did a podcast with Utah radio host Spencer Checketts (son of former Knicks exec Dave Checketts, I think) this morning. Among the topics discussed was Paul Millsap's future.

At the 24:15 mark of the podcast, Checketts said that he heard Houston is interested in Millsap and said that Houston has the room to get him.

Locke and Checketts also said the following regarding Millsap:

    1. Millsap turned down a 3 year, $24M extension offer.

    2. They both think it's a mistake because Ryan Anderson, a comparable player (who Locke think is better), got $32M for 4 years (note: I think he got $34M). Ryan Anderson was also the highest $ contract signed last offseason for FA leaving his team (note: it was a S&T, or a fairly small consideration).

    3. They think Millsap will get something like the Ryan Anderson offer as a free agent, which is the same money with 1 more year.

Would be really interesting if Millsap can be had for $8M/yr or a little more-- this will leave the team plenty of flexibility to make another medium sized upgrade.

However, I kind of doubt he can be had for so little. Looking at the landscape, there are simply too many teams expected to have cap room in 2013 (Detroit, Utah, Houston, Cleveland, Phoenix, Atlanta, etc.) and I find it hard to believe that enough teams will have the patience not to use up their cap room on the biggest name they can find. I mean, every year free agents seem to go for prices that make me go "WTF?!" And this seems to be a players' market for free agency with more available salary room than there are players who are worth the $.

Every time I watch the Jazz I'm disappointed in what I see from Millsap. At this point I don't think I want the guy. And yes, I think he will sign somewhere for more than 8 million a year.

I would be interested to hear people who are familiar with Millsap discuss what his contract will end up at. Will somebody throw the max at him?

I'm not really surprised Utah announcers undervalue him. OKC fans and media wanted Harden to take a cut to stay in OKC. Same type of situation, although Millsap obviously isn't as good as Harden he is definitely gonna get a better deal than Ryan Anderson.

Jefferson or Millsap will be gone with Favors and Kanter the future bigs for Utah. Consensus has been Millsap would be traded and imo he would be a great fit, especially at $8-$9m a year. At soon to be 28, a 4 year contract sounds good to me.

Millsap is alright, but long term he isn't that big of an upgrade of PPAT.

Of course Morey has an interest Millsap and many other players.... at the right cost.

Morey shops the marked down section at the store.

Milsap at $8 is worth it. It'd be nice to move the Lin contract to add more cap room and get another max player. That was a down-right mistake from a basketball standpoint ...likely not from a business standpoint.

But only if he signs for less the 9 because anything more is just awful.

Who will be your point guard? Will you be able to get a starting point guard for less than Lin is making?

Here is the rub, I am sure the Rockets would love to add Millsap, but my guess is not at the expense of their cap space. Paul Millsap is a solid player, but he is not a star and does not make Houston a contender. If you get Paul Milsap for Lin, you better be able to sign Millsap and a number close to what Lin and Patterson make combined, and you better either trade for an elite point guard using your cap space, or know a point guard as good as Lin that can be had at a small cap number.
