Two more old retreads on our staff.

Tomey -> fired by Arizona in 2000, then brought in Mackovic
Robinson -> resigned from KC after getting steamrolled by the Colts in the playoffs a few weekends ago.

    Akina, Robinson named Texas co-coordinators
Brown looks to NFL as he revamps Longhorn defense
    AMERICAN-STATESMAN STAFF
    Tuesday, January 27, 2004
Texas football coach Mack Brown has decided that two defensive coordinators are better than one, announcing today the promotion of Duane Akina and the hiring of longtime NFL assistant coach Greg Robinson as co-coordinators.
Brown also added former University of Arizona head coach Dick Tomey to his revamped defensive staff.
"I'm going to spend more of my time of the offense," Brown said today. "What we've done is reorganize our defensive staff. We'll start on Monday designing the new Texas defense
Robinson, in his 30th year of coaching, was defensive coordinator of the Kansas City Chiefs the past three years. He resigned last week after Kansas City lost to Indianapolis 38-31 in the AFC playoffs.
Robinson has been an NFL coordinator since 1994, first with the New York Jets and then with the Denver Broncos from 1995-2000, including two Super Bowl titles.
"The first thing we tried to do was look to the NFL," Brown said, citing this year's success of former NFL coaches at Louisiana State and Southern California.
Akina joined Brown's staff in 2001 as defensive backs coach and was elevated to assistant head coach last year. He is a University of Washington graduate who has 25 years of coaching experience. He has held defensive assistant jobs at Washington, Hawaii and Arizona, plus Calgary of the Canadian Football League.
Tomey was the head coach at Arizona from 1987 to 2000, when he was replaced by former Texas coach John Mackovic. Before that, Tomey was head coach at Hawaii from 1977 to 1986. Last year, he coached the secondary of the San Francisco 49ers.
Akina will continue to coach the Longhorn secondary, Robinson will coach the linebackers, and Tomey will coach the defensive ends.
The co-coordinators replace Carl Reese, who resigned Jan. 6 after six years as Brown's defensive chief. Tomey replaces Hardee McCrary, who resigned last week as the Longhorns' defensive ends coach and recruiting coordinator.

Well, Greg Robinson was the Defensive Coordinator on the Broncos 2 championship teams. He can't be all bad since he has that on his resume.

Maybe the defensive players on the Chiefs just sucked.

Well the fact that the Broncos didn't think enough of Robinson's two SB, to the point that they eventually fired him means something...

This was UT's chance to hire a young up and coming defensive coordinator who recruits and players could relate to.

Tomey and Robinson are too laid back for UT. UT needed an asskicker in your face type of coach for once, but failed to land him.

I'm surprised that Dick Tomey took a job. He was living in Hawaii doing play-by-play for Hawaii football. He goes from the easy living to being in the coaching pressure cabin known as UT.

Akina still coaching the DBs is another problem that wasn't fixed.

Who cares? There's two sides to the ball, and I doubt our defense would be dominant enough to deal with our offense putting them on the field all the time.

Don't know much about Robinson other than the Colts did whatever they wanted whenever they wanted. Why can't we ever get some young, passionate, innovative coaches?

Can't wait for Mack to leave so Gray can be head coach.

It was? Pray tell, who is this mysterious young hotshot candidate that was spurned by UT?

What's so funny, as if anybody could do a worse job against OU than Carl Reese did...........

....oh, I get it, you're laughing at what Texas did to OU's new hire at DC last year vs. Nebraska.

Now that is some funny sh-t!

You can't seriously think this was our best option.

Also, let's wait and see with both Robinson and Pellini.

Seeing what Pellini did with average to below average talent in one season says something. Stoops is not exactly a moron with staff decisions. How many of his assistants have left to be head coaches?
How many of Mack's have been asked to come anywhere other than Akina?

I don't have names off the top of my head, but I can assure you there were probably some better options than Robinson.

Who was better that they could have gotten?

Since Bo Pellini was riding Stoopy's jock on the sidelines at the Sugar Bowl, I don't think he was an option. (and considering that he got whooped by the antichrist --- Greg Davis, he may not have been a viable one to begin with)

They tried Jerry Gray, that didn't work out, nor did that USC guy.

After a while, you run out of names.

I know everybody wishes that there is some high energy whiz kid out there just chomping at the bit to be the UT dc, but seriously, does such a person even exist?

The OU defense he takes over has a lot more speed and talent than the ones he had at NU.

It will be funny to see him hold UT to 13 pts or so every year.

Valid points. I think the question that I ask is more along the lines of, "Is Robinson really an upgrade from the Bull?"

I never thought much of Reese, during his UT tenure. But I don't think much of Robinson either. I view this as a lateral move.

I think UT would have been better served hiring a position coach from LSU or the like.

I know it's out of the realm of possiblity for UT to hire unexperienced guys to become key assistants.

Why would it be any funnier than before?

That's what they did the last few years.

He'd be underacheiving if he didn't, especially against Greg Davis!
