I know this changes every year, but what is going on with it? I have a son who isn't in the top 10% at a good public high school and he will be applying to UT Austin sometime in the next month or two. He is roughly at 17%. Is there some sort of SAT score that more or less gets you in to Liberal Arts? That is what he is interested in. If you ask, they say "no" as all depends on the essays and extra curriculars etc. I find it difficult to believe that there is not some sort of SAT score that usually gets you in unless there is something unusual good or bad in your ec's and essays.

Also do you have to wait ill April for a decision regardless of when you apply if you aren't in the top 10%?

Extra curriculars and SAT scores play a big role, don't mistake that. I don't know anything about the individual colleges at UT, but I knew people in high school who got into UT with strong SAT and extra curriculars even though they weren't in the top 10%. What's your son's SAT score?

it's been a few years for me, but i believe liberal arts is relatively easy to get into. also, EVERYONE will hear from the school by april 15th or something like that. some earlier, some later. i have a twin and she heard 2 wks before i did and we turned ours in at the same time. it really just depends.

I've heard the magic number for general Fall admissions is around 1350 if you're not in the top 10 percent. Engineering and Business are much more competitive.

UT also has a summer admissions program, where students who are less competitive go through a set schedule of 12 hours during the summer right after their senior year. That's how my sister got in with great extra-curriculars, but an 1150 SAT and below Top 10%.

I've heard a 1350 will get you in pretty safely to any of the schools except Business, Engineering and Communications. if you're not top 10%. Anywhere around there plus decent essays/ECs should be solid enough.

From what I understand, education is particularly easy to get into, especially for males. If you're really worried, and don't mind cheating the system, you can apply through that and transfer schools before school starts. Or apply to it as your 2nd choice, iirc.

    Hook 'em.

That's a surprise to me. UT has always emphasized it's rankings, not what's good for the students. I expect that the avg SAT ranking may be more important than most any other variable.

Past UT SAT averages are about 1220. http://www.princetonreview.com/college/testprep/testprep.asp?TPRPAGE=295&TYPE=SAT SAT verbal scores over 700 15%, SAT math scores over 700 24% http://education.yahoo.com/college/facts/9414.html Doesn't bode well: '...the 2004 freshman class at UT has the best overall academic qualifications in the University's history ...

I hear that UT encourages kids who don't get in to UT Austin to apply for one of their other campuses (like UTSA) and then request a transfer after their first year. Might be something to consider if your son's SAT isn't high enough to overcome his class rank (and good god, isn't it sad that a kid has to "overcome" a top quarter high school ranking).

I'd talk to a UT admissions counsellor before I go the transfer route. The key to transfering into UT is a stellar (3.5-3.8) GPA. It is much harder to transfer than to be admitted normally.

if you apply to UT, but aren't accepted, you could be placed in a program that would allow you to attend a sister school, and if you can maintain a 3.1 GPA for the first year, you may transfer to UT- Austin.

1090. Probably about a 690 Math and 500 English. Can't remember. But got into all schools with that score anyway. I sucked on the test for standard written english they had when I took it. But that was because I took French class, and my french teacher was hot.

Ive never heard of someone with a 1450 not getting in.

I will be applying to UT soon, but I am in a somewhat different situation.

I took the SATs one time and got 690 verbal 670 math for a total of 1360. The problem is that I didnt really do much during highschool and this combined with the fact that I go to a very competitive highschool means im not in the top half in terms of GPA.

Im hoping for acceptance, but I doubt it. (unless the whole legacy thing pulls me through)

Thanks for the info guys. I figured with all the UT folks I could get some probable truth beyond the pr releases.

Drew P. You might also try A& M. My son's best friend got into A & M this fall with a class rank of about 60% (lower half) and I believe a 1320. They have an auto admit at top half and 1300. A & M is really seeking SAT's of over 1300. He was on the waiting list briefly. The kid isn't the most motivated and didn't have great ec's, but could have written good essays, as his mother is a very good writer.

BTW, 20 kids from the A & M Democratic Club drove in some cars to Tallahassee to work on the Kerry campaign so there are a few liberals there. Maybe UT will take transfers from A & M, though it would probably have to be with about a 4.0 average.;)

When I applied to UT in summer of 1979, I got in with a 1020 on my SAT and a 3.0 GPA in High School. The only extra curricular activity I was involved in was skipping first period for herbal horticulture in the high school parking lot.

My actual number one is SMU.

I think im going to get in there, seeing as most of my family has gone there and they dont look at class rank as much as public schools.

Im also applying to TCU and Tulane... we will see what happens.

Rocketman, when I went to school in 1968. I applied to St. Louis U because my parents had gone there. Never gave it a thought. I don't think I even had to anwer so much as a question as to "why i wanted to go there". Maybe there was a line or two somewhere on the app.

My dad told me that in his generation he believed that you could get into virtually any college in the country if you graduated from high school. The application was mainly concerned with whether you thought you could pay the tuition. He never heard of anyone who could pay being rejected anywhere. All the universities were more or less open admission.

Isn't it amazing that without all the bs we still had government and business leaders to run things. Of course back then they did do things like have a high flunk out rate.

I wouldn't worry. The admissions folk will wet themselves when they see that 1450.
