Damn them. No Big surprise. but, NYC was awarded for the US Bid. Honestly, I think it sucks. But I think they should select with their brain, and not their hearts. Sure, I feel bad for NYC too, but come on now. cause we always need a link
Can you say, "Thesentimentalpick?" Thankfully, I won't be here in Manhattan in 2012. You think it's bad now in NYC? Take the Katy freeway expansion project and multiply the headaches by a factor of 6.5. Add 500,000+ more people to Manhattan, and you're talking maximum occupancy. So much so that I wouldn't be surprised if the island sinks like Atlantis... The only good thing that can come out of this would be the $$$ generated for the city. NYC is just about broke right now. Mayor Bloomberg is slashing city payroll (much to the chagrin of my fiancee, who wants to work for the City), dumping projects, thinking about setting up bridge tolls, reducing fireman/policeman headcount, etc. It's pretty bad. Problem is, by 2012, the City will probably be fine, financially. However, in the case that it's not (and a recession could reappear then, being a cycle and all), the Olympics would be a good thing.
Houston was robbed. Bottom line. I don't think we offered enough college scholarships and prositutes.
First I am going to say, yes I personally think Houston got robbed. Second, NYC? Yes I realize they're the sentimental pick, but come ON committee. Has anyone thought about how difficult it will be to hold the Olympics in New York? The place is more crowded than anyplace I've ever been (albeit I was like 10, so I imagine it wasn't as bad as I thought), security will be almost impossible, and the last time I checked neighborhood leaders were PROTESTING the bid! On top of that, where are they going to build any venues they might need? Anyway, I'm just going to say thast I would've rather seen the Olympics here or in SF before NYC. P.S. I thought the monetary aspect was overrated?? People were talking about how Atlanta lost money, but it was more of a prestige thing. I dunno, money matters make my head hurt. Oughta make planning my 401k fun.
It's one thing for ever-insecure Bay Area people to whine and moan, but Houstonians??? Most of the world doesn't even know you exist - and if they did Houston would be the last place they'd want to visit during the summer. IMO, Houston will not host an Olympics in any cc.net poster's lifetime, even if modern medicine ups the life expectancy to 187. The US probably won't get the bid anyways.
Did anybody see weekend update on Saturday Night Live? "New York City was named as a finalist for the 2012 Olympics, so that gives New Yorkers 10 years to get the hell out!"
I disagree. Houston and Texas are known around the world. I honestly think the fact that Houston doesn't have the natural beauty of the other cities hurt. Of course, Atlanta isn't beautiful either. Didn't they wreck the olympics? Maybe the committee held that against us? I don't remember how ATL stole the bid from Toronto.
I agree that Texas is well-known, but I think most people think of Dallas when they think of TX. I also agree Houston's plain vanilla scenery hurts it. But Atlanta to me isn't really that bad. Atlanta is very nicely forested with rolling hills and doesn't have a lot of the endless strip malls and potholed roads Houston has amassed. Savannah is also a short drive away. Atlanta also has/had very strong local corporate backing to sponsor the games. As far as New York's natural beauty, the harbour and central park (mostly man-made) are quite nice. But the majority of the beauty is definitely man-made.
