The deal is pending the Mets and Santana reaching agreement on a six- or seven-year contract extension and that Santana passes a physical; they have been granted a 48 to-72-hour window to do so. Santana has a no-trade clause that he will waive if agreement is reached on a contract extension. The Mets paid a high price in prospects to land Santana, agreeing to send the Twins outfielder Carlos Gomez and pitchers Phil Humber, Deolis Guerra and Kevin Mulvey. The deal would give the Mets the much-needed ace at the front of their rotation. Santana won the American League Cy Young Award in 2004 and 2006 and is 93-44 lifetime. He went 15-13 with a 3.33 ERA for the Twins last season. Santana has struck out at least 235 batters each of the past four seasons. While the deal drains much of the talent out of the Mets' farm system, they did manage to hold on to top prospect Fernando Martinez, an outfielder. Instead, they headed the package with Gomez, who turned 22 in December and spent 58 games with the Mets last year. Gomez is what scouts like to call a five-tool player, a combination of offensive ability that includes power and speed as well as an above-average defensive game and a strong arm. He has worked to cut down a strikeout rate that was high during the early part of a minor league career that began in 2004 after the Mets signed him out of the Dominican Republic. He made his major league debut last May and hit .232. Humber, 25, is the Mets' 2004 first-round pick who has made five major league appearances, including one start, over the past two seasons. He won 11 games at Class AAA last season, his first full year after having Tommy John surgery in 2005. Santana would give the Mets the best rotation in the NL East after they missed out on the division title by one game thanks to a historic September collapse. He'd likely be joined by Pedro Martinez, John Maine, Oliver Perez and Orlando "El Duque" Hernandez. The Twins, meanwhile, would see yet another young star they produced leave the organization. Their Gold Glove outfielder, Torii Hunter, left for the Los Angeles Angels this offseason. Gomez would be a candidate to replace him in center field.
Meet the Mets, meet the Mets, Head for the park and greet the Mets. Hot dogs, green grass all out at Shea, Guaranteed to have a heck of a day. Because those Mets are really rockin' that ball, Hittin' those home runs over the wall. Long Island, New Jersey, Brooklyn, Queens, Uptown and Down, Let's Go Mets: that's the cheer all over New York town.
Hopefully this takes the Mets out of the running for Livan Hernandez, and the Stros can start talks with him.
Joooo-han - I might have to turn into a Mets fan. Santana is my favorite MLB player (because we have the same last name) Might have to go check out some Mets/Stros games at MMP when he pitches
Are you implying that there's a good one? A 7-8 year big money commitment to a pitcher reeks of future salary albatross.
It would have been nice to see him in a Red Sox uniform, but I wasn't looking forward to his contract being over 150M for either 6 or 7 years. Just glad that the Yankees didn't get him and that we still have Ellsbury and Lester. Personally, I think the Twins could have done better as both offers from NYY and Boston were better than the Mets but whatever. Congrats, Mets.
I'll be in Chicago on April 21st and already have tickets for the Mets/Cubs game that evening. Hopefully I'll get to see him shut 'em down that night.
I should let this go, but Brad Sullivan is a friend. If his elbow would have held up, he would have been a good MLB player. I watched him at spring training and he mowed through Major Leaguers, but his elbow was giving him problems before the inning was done.
HAHAHA at the GM of the Twins. He got a great offer from the Yankees that included one of the best young pitchers in all of baseball (and the top prospect last year) and he decided to get greedy. In the end he irritated both of the two teams that offered him top tier talent and got forced to take a sub-prime package from the Mets. He just got spanked.
being a yankees fan I'm pissed to hear this.......oh well at least he didn't go to boston...........but damnit Yanks still need some pitching
Lincoln is not a bust. He was drafted in '06...it's only '08. Wagner made it to The Show in one month after college will be on a MLB roster. Humber, Neiman, Townsend, Kenny Baugh, Mario Ramos, Matt Anderson, Josh Baker....the list goes on and on.
