I saw this and it surprised me. Obviously the source is kind of murky, but if it comes from someone who is well placed and who isn't just a Huckabee cheerleader (i.e. if the author’s characterization of the source is correct), then I give it some credence.

Source: Huckabee Tops McCain's Veep List
    May 12, 2008 11:38 AM ET | James Pethokoukis

Mike Huckabee, the former governor of Arkansas and defeated contender for the GOP presidential nomination, is currently at the top of John McCain's short list for a running mate. At least that's the word from a top McCain fundraiser and longtime Republican moneyman who has spoken to McCain's inner circle. The fundraiser is less than thrilled with the idea of Huckabee as the vice presidential nominee, and many economic conservatives—turned off by the populist tone of Huckabee's campaign and his tax record as governor—are likely to share that marked lack of enthusiasm. But here is the logic of picking Huckabee:

    1) He is a great campaigner and communicator who could both shore up support in the South among social conservatives (Huckabee is a former Baptist minister) and appeal to working-class voters in the critical "Big 10" states of Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Ohio.

    2) As any pollster knows, voters search for candidates who "care about people like me," and Huckabee would probably score a lot higher on that quality than millionaire investor Mitt Romney. Plus, given all the turmoil on Wall Street, 2008 would seem to be a bad year to pick a former investment banker for veep.

    3) Economic conservatives and supply-siders may balk, but the threat of four years of Obamanomics and higher investment, income, and corporate taxes might be enough to keep them on board.

Let me add that a top Republican political strategist told me about a month ago that he also believed Huckabee to be the leading veep contender.

Mitt Romney is not a former investment banker. Good grief.

Based on demeanor alone I think this is a decent pick.

Hmm. My first thought is I really don't think Huckabee would be a good running mate for McCain. Need more time to consider this. I would be REALLY surprised if McCain chose Huckabee.

not trying to insult mccain, i think it was on bill maher's show that someone made the point they don't want romney standing next to mccain because of how it makes mccain physically look, like he's weak.

I thought of this too. Romney is like a foot taller than McCain and better spoken as well.

If the size of the candidate has any bearing on the election, then we shouldn't be allowed to choose the president in the first place.

It's not like they have to physically lead the country into battle or something.

For me, selecting Romney would almost make McCain radioactive. It's possible Huckabee could have the same effect after I learn more about him.

After some thought, I don't believe this story at all. No way in the world McCain chooses Huckabee as veep. No bloomin' way. The story could be a "wet finger in the wind" to see how much flak he gets, which I'm betting is plenty.

Huckabee is a great communicator. He'd wipe the floor with whoever Obama picks at the VP debate(especially if it's someone like John Edwards).

The problem with Huckabee is that he can easily be portrayed as a religious nut. While that will attract conservative voters that may otherwise be hesitant to support McCain, it could scare off swing voters.

Then again, Obama may be very reluctant to go after Huckabee's religious views in the aftermath of "Bittergate". The last thing he wants to do is piss off evangelicals and small town folks even more than he already has.

I think the RNC needs to draft Huckabee as a party leader, maybe chairman. He's pretty good at raising money, he's great in the talk-show appearances, he's not a part of the mess that is the current leadership, and although he's not consistent on policy details, his rhetoric is consistent with traditional conservative values. For McCain, he merely amounts to trying to placate the evangelicals.
