It is interesting how hypocritical the US is about Iraqi democracy. The Shiites won about 130 out of 275 seats in the Assembly. . Remember all the nice pr from Dubya and gang, all the purple finger happiness? The war was wonderful and worth it-- a glorious worthwhile war again!! Then the Shiites won bigger than we wanted. :( The US does not like the leader the winning Shi ites want, so now we are trying to block him

We are trying to block the elected ****es from exercising power for many, as usual, allegedly idealistic reasons. This sure shows how we only want Iraqi democracy when it elects people we want. It shows that "self determination" under foreign rule is a charade. This hurts us and the cause of democracy worldwide for the whole world sees this except for many in the US.

This is the "noble cause" for which the chickenhawks ask others to die for?

    Glynch,

do you have a link or something that highlights this? If so, it would definitely be pretty hypocritical; it counters everything the administration said about bringing 'democracy' to Iraq.

Democracy is tricky in that region, if we're serious about it then we must deal with the fact that we will have to deal with people we don't like or see eye-to-eye with. In most of those countries, the primary opposition are the Islamists, because they're the only ones organized enough and trusted enough by the masses, given the utter failure of the secular Arab regimes over the past half-century or so to produce anything worthwhile for their people.

IMO, I think the Administration is having doubts about the whole 'Middle East Initiative' project, I think they're going to be more picky moving forward.

IMO, the Bush Administration has started World War III, and will leave it to the next administration to clean it up.

You're not the only one --

Founder Of Delta Force: "Bush May Well Have Started The Third World War"...

Eric Haney, a retired command sergeant major of the U.S. Army, was a founding member of Delta Force, the military's elite covert counter-terrorist unit.

We recently spoke to Haney, an amiable, soft-spoken Southern gentleman, on the set of "The Unit."

Q: What's your assessment of the war in Iraq?

A: Utter debacle. But it had to be from the very first. The reasons were wrong. The reasons of this administration for taking this nation to war were not what they stated. (Army Gen.) Tommy Franks was brow-beaten and ... pursued warfare that he knew strategically was wrong in the long term.

That's why he retired immediately afterward. His own staff could tell him what was going to happen afterward.

We have fomented civil war in Iraq. We have probably fomented internecine war in the Muslim world between the Shias and the Sunnis, and I think Bush may well have started the third world war, all for their own personal policies.

Shiites Say U.S. Is Pressuring Iraqi Leader to Step Aside
    By EDWARD WONG
    Published: March 28, 2006

BAGHDAD, Iraq, March 28 — Senior Shiite politicians said today that the American ambassador has told Shiite officials to inform the Iraqi prime minister that President Bush does not want him to remain the country's leader in the next government.

It is the first time the Americans have directly intervened in the furious debate over the country's top job, the politicians said, and it is inflaming tensions between the Americans and some Shiite leaders.

The ambassador, Zalmay Khalilzad, told the head of the main Shiite political bloc at a meeting last Saturday to pass a "personal message from President Bush" on to the prime minister, Ibrahim al-Jaafari, who the Shiites insist should stay in his post for four more years, said Redha Jowad Taki, a Shiite politician and member of Parliament who was at the meeting.

Ambassador Khalilzad said that President Bush "doesn't want, doesn't support, doesn't accept" Mr. Jaafari to be the next prime minister, according to Mr. Taki, a senior aide to Abdul-Aziz al-Hakim, the head of the Shiite bloc.

It was the first "clear and direct message" from the Americans on the issue of the candidate for prime minister, Mr. Taki said.

The Downing Street Memo II may or may not have been an indication about whether democracy was really important when considering why to go to war. But this speaks very loudly that democracy is not chief among the concerns of President Bush, and this administration in regards to Iraq.

    What a shame.
