I am a teacher of english in China.I am going to give my students a test on reading comprehension.Since many of my students are avid basketball fans,I've copied an article from the net and written a few questions based on it.The problem is I'm not familiar with basketball terms.Could you please read the sentences below and tell me whether they are right or wrong?Thank you in advance! 1.Yao Ming was selected in the first round (first overall) by the Houston Rockets in NBA Draft 2002. 2.How did Yao Ming rank in 2001-02 CBA season? 3.How did Yao Ming average in the playoffs to help Shanghai get its first CBA championship? 4.Who is the No.1 pick of the Houston Rockets in NBA Draft 2002?
The first one was not phrased as a question, so I am assuming you wanted to ask if he was selected by the Houston Rockets. The 2nd question is vague are you asking how many points per game he averaged? What is rank? The 3rd questions I edited to be more specific, again I am assuming you are asking a specific question, so I changed it to points. If you want to say points and rebounds say this. 3. How many points and rebounds did Yao Ming average in leading the Shanghai Sharks to thier first CBA championship? The fourth question is kind of given away by the first, but is ok in structure. Good luck. DaDakota
I am no english teacher but everything looks fine to me except question 3. You said: How did Yao Ming average in the playoffs to help Shanghai get its first CBA championship? It should say: What did Yao Ming average in the playoffs to help Shanghai get its first CBA championship?
This is not phrased as a question and repeats question 4. As stated by others, you might want to use the word 'average' instead of 'rank.' But you might also want to ask average points or average rebounds. Just something a little more specific. Replace 'how' with 'what.' But again, you may want to specify points. Maybe you could ask what team drafted Yao Ming with the No. 1 NBA pick.
If I were writing the questions they would go like this: 1. Who was selected in the first round (first overall) by the Houston Rockets in the 2002 NBA Draft? 2. How did Yao Ming rank in the catagories of points per game, rebounds per game, and block shots per game during the 2001-2002 CBA regular season? 3. How many points per game did Yao Ming average during the playoffs to help Shanghai win its first CBA Championship? 4. Who was the number one pick of the Houston Rockets in the 20002 NBA Draft? note: Questions 1 and 4 are asking the same question. I hope this helps. Go Yao Ming!
Sentence 1:I forgot to mention it's not a question. It's a statement in the article and I changed it to a sentence. Original version: ¡°NBA DRAFT 2002 Selected in the first round (first overall) by the Houston Rockets.¡± Sentence 2:The question is based on a sentence in the article: ¡°In the 2001-02 CBA (China Basketball Association) season, Yao led the league in blocked shots (4.8 bpg), and ranked 2nd in scoring (32.4 ppg) and rebounding (19.0 rpg).¡± Sentence 3& 4:You are right. I just didn¡¯t know how to ask the questions. Thank you all! You are very friendly and helpful.I am very glad that Yao Ming will go to your city.
This is a reply from a Rox fan educated at Manchester University, England. 1)OK,2)In what position, did Yao Ming rank in (points per game) in the 2001-02 CBA Season? It need clarification!3)What did Yao Ming average in (points per game) in the playoffs to help Shanghai get it's first CBA Championship? It needed clarification! 4) Who is the No.1 pick of the Houston Rockets in the 2002 NBA Draft? The Definite Article ' the' must be included for it to be correct English. In this case the date would precede the event. If after then you would use the preposition 'in' 2002. No.1) is a statement not a question! In fact it's the answer to No.4. I suggest you compose another question! For example:-a) Did Yao Mings parents play Basketball? b) How tall is Yao Ming? It is an honor to help!
