This is what my source told me today: The doctors put a screw in Yao's foot. It will be taken out in 2 weeks. After that they will have a plastic device for Yao to wear to protect his foot. Yao will wear it for 2 months. When it's off, Yao should be able to walk and shoot baskets(no running). According to the doctors, the recovery for this type of injury would be particularly slow for big men. Normal people need about 4 months, but Yao will most likely miss the World championship game at late August (20% of chance to play, my source said. ) The good news is , the Chinese National team has showed great patience so far. They told Yao to take care of the foot first and not worry too much about the world championship game.
With all due respect, I must confess though I read your post with some degree of skepticism. Please understand this is by no means being bashful of you as a poster. First let me say I have neither experience nor expertise in this field. My knowledge is entirely google-based. If you read in Clutch's thread "Yao undergoes successful foot surgery", you'll see an article on the post-surgery rehabilitation of basketball player injured with Jones Fracture. You notice there is considerable difference in the time required for full recovery -- 6-8 weeks vs 4-6 months. Further, and the more puzzling, is taking out screw at the 2-week mark. In most articles (including the one I posted), there is no mentioning of removal of the screw at all -- suggesting the screw may stay permanently within the foot (more precisely, within the fifth metatarsal). Only when the patient develops symptoms related to the head of the screw at late stage of healing process may the removal of the screw be necessary, as indicated in another article. I understand each doctor has his/her unique way of treating patients, but the information in your post with regard to Yao's recovery seems to deviate quite significantly from the more widely accepted practices found on the Internet.
OK Yao take your time big fella and just be ready to come back right before camp. Don't think about playing even one minute in China.
FYI, iOrange isn't an ordinary poster. He is the owner of hoopchina.com, the most popular basketball bbs in China.
And if you take a look at the Yao breaks foot thread you'll find another article that is completely consistent with the thread starter's description of the recovery. There are definitely different views on how to rehab from this injury.
Though I really want to see Yao beat other centers in Japan, health is most important thing. So just bless~~
I broke my wrist and when my arm came out of the cast 6 weeks later it was real skinny and weak, I wonder how Yao's leg will look?
I am aware of that article, which deals with the rehab of soccer player. Although Isiah Thomas was able to score 25 points in a quarter in an NBA Final game on a broken foot, I can't imagine a soccer player with foot problem functions unimpededly on soccer field, let alone score a goal. The discrepancy in time needed for full recovery may be somewhat rectified considering the enormous size of Yao. My major problem with the post by the thread starter is the removal of screw at 2-week mark.
your "major problem"? you talk like he's here to purposely pass harmful information to us or something. just take the info and chill. gettin allllll defensive and stuff...
Can you please let wnes discuss the topic. I understand who iOrange is and I appreciate his presence here on the bbs, but I do not understand your way of treating him as a god.
I read from other sources that Yao was screwed, but won't be unscrewed because it's compound fracture? What is exactly that?
I think the Chinese National Team is eyeing on the 2008 Olympic Game place this as there highest priority. Afterall, it is the biggest game at home. Saving private Yao.
Per Yao's agent in China, Lu Hao, Yao himself feels it won't take four months for his foot to fully recover and he still very much wants to play in the WCP, which starts on 8/19. Also, besides his left foot, Yao doesn't have any other problem area in his body from the through checkup. http://sports.sohu.com/20060416/n242825307.shtml
