HOUSTON (TICKER) —Houston Rockets guard Rafer Alston is expected to miss at least one week with a strained right hamstring, the club announced on Tuesday.

After undergoing an MRI earlier at Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center, tests revealed that Alston has a moderate to severe strain. He sustained the injury in the third quarter of Sunday’s 111-94 home loss to the Denver Nuggets.

Alston’s injury couldn’t have come a worse time for the Rockets (54-27), who are still chasing the Utah Jazz (54-27) for fourth place and home-court advantage in the Western Conference playoffs.

The 6-2 New York playground legend is averaging 13.1 points and 5.3 assists through 74 games this season.

Rockets' Alston to miss 'at least' start of playoffs

Rockets starting point guard Rafer Alston will miss at least the first few games of the playoffs with a pulled right hamstring he suffered Sunday in Denver, the Rockets announced today.

After an MRI examination of the injury, Alston was declared out for at least another week after sitting out Monday's game against the Jazz, an absence that even at the minimum projected would force him to miss the first two games of a first-round playoff series to begin Saturday or Sunday.

Bobby Jackson, acquired in a trade deadline deal to provide a veteran backup at the position, came back after missing one game with strained left knee and calf and would continue to start with Alston out.

Alston has had some hamstring and groin strains during the season, but that was on his left leg. He averaged 13.1 points and 5.3 rebounds and 3.5 rebounds this season, making 39.4 percent of his shots.

Jackson has averaged 8.5 points on 41.8 percent shooting in his 25 games with the Rockets. Rookie Aaron Brooks, who moved back into the Rockets' rotation when Alston missed three games this month with a strained groin injury, would likely become the primary backup point guard.

As much as I dislike Rafer, this is horrible news...

...It will be interesting to see how Aaron responds to having to step up.

Our point guard depth just took a hit. We might see some Luther at point guard like in yesterday's game if Brooks gets in foul trouble. What a scary thought.

We Want Steve? Just kidding. Its crazy to think that we went from flooded at the PG position to just one healthy PG, who is a rookie.

He's going to miss a few (3) games then that means he will play 1 game? Might as well pack it in.
