Kolb Named National Offensive Freshman of the Year
Joined On All-League Team By Hadnot And Middleton

    Dec. 10, 2003

HOUSTON, Texas - University of Houston freshman quarterback Kevin Kolb (Stephenville, Texas) today was named by the College Football News as its Offensive Freshman of the Year. It is the second straight national honor for the true freshman Kolb, as yesterday he picked up Third Team, Freshman All-America honors from The Sporting News.

Kolb also was named to the CFN Conference USA First Team, was the publication's Freshman of the Year and his game against TCU (434 yards passing, 144 yards rushing) was named the Best Performance of the year.

Joining Kolb on CFN's C-USA All-Conference team was senior wide receiver Brandon Middleton and center Rex Hadnot. Kolb, Middleton and Hadnot all were selected the top performers at their respective positions, while sophomore running back Anthony Evans was selected the fifth-best back in the league.

The Cougars as a team were selected as CFN's Biggest Surprise.

Memphis running back DeAngelo Williams was the Conference USA Offensive Player of the Year, while Southern Miss linebacker Michael Boley was C-USA Defensive Player of the Year.

Starting all 12 games for the Cougars, Kolb passed for nearly 2,800 yards and 23 touchdowns and in helping lead Houston to its first bowl appearance in seven years. He also rushed for an additional 339 yards and seven scores, becoming the first UH quarterback since Gerald Landry in 1984 to top 300 yards rushing in a season. Kolb became the first true freshman to start a season opener as quarterback for the Cougars in school history and would go on to set virtually every freshman passing record.

His 5.8:1 touchdown-to-interception ratio ranks as the second-best in UH single-season history and is currently the third-best nationally amongst Division I-A quarterbacks. He became one of only four players in NCAA Division I-A history to throw for 400 yards and rush for 100 yards against C-USA rival TCU on Oct. 25. His interception percentage (1.22) is the lowest in C-USA history.

Kolb enters the Sheraton Hawai'i Bowl having thrown at least one touchdown pass in all but two games this season and has thrown at least two TD scores in nine games and each of the last three contests.

This season, he tops all freshman passers in Division I-A in attempts (326), completions (201), passing yards (2,799) and passing touchdowns (23) and is the national freshman leader with seven wins as a starter.

...but would a single one of those voters take Kolb over Vincent Young or Chris Leak ;)? Probably not (well, maybe one).

I know that's not the real question. But I do think that if you believe Kolb would have fared poorer than either one with their schedule, then you shouldn't vote for him. And I find it hard to believe anyone could successfully argue that.

Clear cases of good stats getting taken over substance.

If given the choice, I would actually choose Leak, Young, then Kolb, however, given that, you can't deny how well he did in his first year and the confidence that gives him and the team...

Stats are stats, but apparently, you've never seen him play or else you wouldn't be so quick to judge...

Kolb is the real deal and in a great system, but BTW, so are Young and Leak...

And if you actually read posts for what they say, instead of instantly categorizing them, you might realize you just made a nonresposive post.

Kolb is a good player. Good. Young and Leak are already superb. Stating what is relatively obvious, that they're better, isn't precisely disparaging Kolb. And I've seen him play twice, incidentally.

I don't know how VY would have fared in UH's very complex offense in his TRUE freshman year. He throws the ball like 5-10 times a game at UT. If he was at UH, he would be required to throw it 50+.

Obviously, VY is the superior talent, but I don't think you can assume VY would have been lights out in UH's offense, though UH does run the option a lot.

Kolb did an awesome job of grasping the offense from Day 1 and putting points on the board.

I think if they had an athlete like Vince Young at the helm, Art Briles would have adopted his offense to fit him. Hell even stubborn ass Greg Davis did it!:) Hell, if they had Vince Young last year, Dana Dimel might still be coaching there.

Seriously though, Kolb had a great season, you can't take anything away from him.

Kolb played in that offense in High School.

Not trying to be negative, just pointing out he didn't have to learn it.

I am aware of that, since Briles coached at Stephenville. Nonetheless, adapting from 4A ball to college ball that quickly is impressive.

Not sure why anyone would be comparing Kolb, a true freshman, to Young, a redshirt.

Or the fact that Young has much better talent around him. I know he plays tougher competition, but Young plays on a team that is better than its opponent 95% of the time.

Young didn't even start every game. He shouldn't be considered based on talent alone, that's not how awards are ever given anywhere.

That's cool. I guess he deserves it over Young and Leak since he played the whole year. I like seeing talent stay in-state and do well.

You have to play all 12 games to get an award ? Who the hell made that rule?

Young started enough of the year to make that irrelevant.

One of 3 freshman QBs ever to pass and rush for 1000+ yards.

Was the team's best player in a victory over #10 K-State, dominated against a 9-3 Nebraska team, was the sole bright spot against OK (rushed for well over 100 yards), played great a Cotton Bowl- bound Okie St squad.

Who has Kolb dominated against, now ?

Sorry, you have to play in a conference with actual "defense" for stats to be meaningful.

Here's all you really need to know: Nebraska smashed the ever-living **** out of Southern Miss, the conference USA champion. They stifled their O and made their D look like crap. Um... guess who smacked the everliving bejesus out of Nebraska?

Kolb's stats mean nothing. His league is too pathetic.

Somebody's mad that UH has the best quarterback in the state ;)

Even in a mediocre conference, it's not easy to throw 30 TD with only 4 INT - his TD/INT ratio is far better than VY, and even better than Jason White's. Keep in mind that he doesn't have a great O-line like UT's or OU's to protect him or block for him when he runs.

    1,000 yards passing. Wow!

Young is surrounded by much better talent. His stats mean nothing. You don't think Kolb could have done well in that system?
