Im trying to reduce my sodium intake but its damn near impossible with eating lunch outdoors. Even subway the supposed king of healthy options, the average sub has 2000 mg of sodium. Without having to cook my own is there anywhere or any food i can buy that is low in sodium and reasonably low in fat?
Try wholefoods market. Usually the organic/vegan are less in sodium. Another thing I heard is if you drink lots of water, you are allowed to have a little more sodium in your body.
i've been trying to be more conscience about it. Once you start paying attention you are really surprised how much sodium are in our routine foods.
It's very difficult. Especially when you consider that basically all processed foods are freaking LOADED with sodium (and usually all sorts of other crap). I wish you the best of luck. I would suggest maybe water, fresh fruit, and see if you can find real yogurt somewhere. Maybe some granola or something if you're into that (definitely check the label though). Not the most exciting or satisfying necessarily, but it's pretty hard to find good sources protein that aren't chock full o' sodium without cooking for yourself. I usually prefer a light lunch anyway.
I know exactly what you mean. I recently turned 40, and have seen my BP slowly increasing over the last couple of years, and I have been trying to cut my sodium intake. I agree, it's very hard to do unless you cook yourself. Trying to change my bad eating habits has been one of the toughest things I've had to do in a while! I work outside, and pulling into a McDonalds or Jack in the Box is just too easy. Wh
Cutting carbs is easy. Cutting sugar is easy. Cutting fat is easy. For some reason, cutting sodium is almost impossible. Unless you're eating nothing but raw vegetables, pretty much everything has salt in it.
(OOPS, hit the submit on accident) what I was trying to say was why can't they make a healthy fast food joint on every corner?
Thats because sodium doesn't make you fat. Not to mention unless you are really careful, Subway also packs on the calories. Salt/Fat/Sugar are what make most things taste good. Good luck finding a lot of prepared food without those things.
Honestly, I think what it comes down to is you pretty much have to cook for yourself. And acknowledge the fact that it's the sodium loaded in processed food that will hurt you, not the box of kosher salt in your cupboard or the naturally occurring sodium in raw foods. We do need sodium to live, after all.
Yep. It's frustrating to make a turkey sandwich on whole-wheat bread with mustard only...then realize how much salt is already in all 3 ingredients.
Sweat more or even have a good workout for at least an hour. Cutting back on transfats and high fructose also helps too because of it's effects on your metabolism. I eat what I want and make the rest up through exercise and a lot of water. Then again, I'm a skinny asian so results may vary.
gotta cook for yourself and just use a lot of different spices instead of salt. Sooner or later every day turns into curry... HPT sux. I feel you bro. You're not alone.
Ugh! I was just trying to look information up on this today and this thread now has me depressed. I am going to be on some medication long-term that causes you to retain salt and lose potassium so it is highly recommended to going on a low-sodium diet. I am a picky eater and eat pretty bad right now. I also love to eat out at restaurants. Sounds like this is going to be a nearly impossible task for me.
