    Consider yourself warned...

Heath I tried to catch you in chat but you left pretty quickly. Here is a bit of news you might find interesting:

    Cumbrians in administration
    Story by Al Woodcock
    11 June 2002

United have placed themselves in voluntary administration in a bid to stave off financial collapse, it emerged today. The Barnsley firm of BKR Haines Watts have been appointed to replace United's directors Mark Knighton and Andrea Whittaker.

Mark Knighton: Handed over control to administrators
United have placed themselves in voluntary administration after being granted permission by the High Court.

Administrators David Elliott and David Walker from Barnsley-based BKR Haines Watts will take over the running of the club from directors Mark Knighton and Andrea Whittaker this week and attempt to find a way out of the hole United now find themselves in. The players remaining at the club have been told they won't be paid at all over the remainder of the close season unless the PFA provide another loan. Already they are owed some £40,000 from an original loan that was taken out by the cash-strapped Cumbrians last season.

United face a winding-up order at the High Court on June 26 over an unpaid tax bill of £416,000 PAYE. Further outstanding VAT and corporation tax payments are thought to take the total owed up to over £700,000. Other creditors include the PFA, Shelbourne FC and out-of-contract players who have only been offered about 40% of the pay deal in their contracts.

The administrators will almost certainly look to sell the club to either Dublin businessman John Courtenay or Carlisle entrepreneur Brooks Mileson. Both men have said they will work together if necessary to buy the club out of the trouble it is in. Creditors still have the power to reject a rescue package but the 75% approval necessary is thought likely if the amount on offer is substantially higher than what would be on the table in a liquidation.

The club and the administrators issued a joint statement which said:

"The purpose of the appointment is to allow the club to continue and whilst the season is currently closed, everyone is looking forward to the new season which commences in August. The directors are assisting the administration process by providing working capital for the club in the interim period.

"The administrators are aware that the club was in the process of realising surplus land assets, the proceeds of which will restore the company's liquidity and provide a positive cash flow. The administrators are in the process of putting together a financial plan which would reschedule the repayment of the company's debts and a further statement will be made later on in the week."

Although the PFA may provide temporary respite with their expected loan to help pay players' wages, the absence of key sponsors and a planned 90% boycott by supporters of home games will severely hamper any recovery plan. Fans have been campaigning for over three years to overthrow the Knighton regime and they will be encouraged by the news that Mark Knighton and Andrea Whittaker, the two incumbent directors have handed over control to a neutral third party.

United have just 15 professionals left on their books, of whom six have minimal first-team experience. It is not yet clear whether the club will be allowed to sign any new players given their serious financial plight and the outstanding PFA loan. In the past, the Football League have strictly forbid clubs in receivership from kicking-off the new season, but under administration, the rules are generally more relaxed. The fixtures for the new season will be published on Thursday.

I guess since others are actually looking at this I can give a better explanation for the reason I posted this...
Since taking over Carlisle in teh CM sim I have taking a fancy to keeping up with them in real life. Heath and I often discuss the situation they are in and the above news item is a major announcement. To preface it a little I will give some background info(not that anyone cares). For the last 4-5 years the Carlisle club has been owned by Michael Knighton(he once attempted to purchase Man U but had less than 1/3 of the funds he promised). To many loyal Carlisle fans he has done nothing but nearly run the team into the ground(on a side note. He is actually barred by a court order from participat ing in any business in England for 2 more years due to an unrelated court case from 3 years ago). He has sunk the club into debt that estimations say are near 2 million pounds, several local Carlisle organizations have been attempting to oust him from ownership and force him to sell the team. In recent polling over 90% of season ticket holders have said they will not renew their tix if he remains the owner for next season. He has had several suitors for the team and each time has publicly said he was in deep negotiations to sell and then at the last minute has accused the potential buyer of misrepresentation or not being able to prove they had proper funding. The latter of which has been proven to be false and moreover it was proven the sale fell thru because he failed to turn over some imprtant legal documents about how much debt the team had. The club currently has 15 players on roster and several players with expired contracts have not been paid since March. Needless to say the decision in the above article is a major announcement . Hopefully it will lead to new ownership and Roddy Collins re-instatement as Manager. I could go on but I am tired of typing, if anyone is interested in hearing more catch me in chat sometimes. I can tell you about some of the humorous and unintelligent things Michael Knighton has done.

So now all Carlisle need to do is appoint you as their manager. Would you accept a measly 400k a year? :D

Former United owner Knighton in deep trouble. Ok - he never owned them, but was introduced as the new owner at the start of a new season in the first game at home vs Millwall (United won 4-1 I think, and he was in fact popular then as noone really liked the old owner). Pretty funny he is now accusing others of not having the funds, when that was the reason he never got United. But had he gotten them he would not have had any financial problems now (if United had been as successful, something that might be doubtful considering all the **** he has produced at Carlisle). I guess Edwards was not a bad owner anyway :D
