We continue to follow developments regarding the swine flu outbreak. This afternoon we learned that a University of Houston-Downtown student has a "probable" diagnosis of swine flu. Health professionals are using a three-tiered ranking of confirmed, probable and suspected to describe possible cases.
At this time, UHD remains open for business as usual.
Final test results will not be available until sometime tomorrow afternoon. On Wednesday, this student came to UHD’s Student Health Services complaining of flu-like symptoms. After initial diagnosis, staffers at the center sent the student home.
Experts at the University of Texas Health Science Center that operate UHD’s Student Health Services indicate the “probable” standing is based on three criteria being used by the City of Houston’s health department and other health agencies.
    1. The student had flu symptoms and a preliminary test came back positive for“Type A” flu.
    2. This student had traveled to Mexico very recently.
    3. This student had the upper respiratory systems that have been associated with the swine flu.
This week several individuals have gone to Student Health Services complaining of flu-like symptoms. To date this is the only case to receive a “probable” designation.
One of the most important messages we can provide at this time is to recognize flu-like symptoms and to seek medical assistance immediately if you believe you may have them. Please remember, if you are sick, do not come to class or work at this time and do not return to class or work until you recover fully.

    it's like airborne aids...

on a serious note...what is the mortality rate with the normal flu?

The Mortality rate is extremely low. so I wouldn't put that much concern over it.

U of H wouldn't shut down unless there were significant deaths on campus.

I remember when Ike was coming into town U of H main campus wouldn't shut down early, but they issued a "do what you got to do" kind of memo to students. Of course, teachers didn't have to postpone tests or anything so it was sort of a slap in the face.

Seriously, if you are sick, stay home guys. Even if it is finals time. Stay home!

UH's Main Campus and UH Downtown are completely different. They both operate differently and independently of each other, which I'm sure you know. My whole point is UHD closed down during Ike, even though UH Main did not. UHD will close down for any type of emergency if need be.
