Mostly a PC gamer, so I don't know a whole lot about the consoles, but wondering what games you BBSers feel were underrated, were good but didn't have lot of hype about them etc.? For me I have just started getting into Severance: Blade of Darkness. An extremely gorry game, with heaps of blood, mutilations etc. set in a sort of RPG world. I didn't hear alot about this game when it was released and didn't know that much about it. But I have only played it for about an hour and am hooked, can't wait to get back to hacking some evil beings!! What games do you think are better than what the media has released about them? or are good and haven't read/heard alot about?
I'm not sure what the media thinks about it, but it's wildly popular and I think rightfully so. The Age of Empires series is really fantastic. Can't wait for Age of Mythology.
No one lives forever is a GREAT...GREAT game, and under marketed. Conquest Frontier Wars is in the same boat, a great game with zero marketing. (kind of biased though) Dark Earth as well. The best game I have played in the last 3 years has been Medal of Honor Allied Assault.... I am a WW2 fan, and this game just brought me into it like no other. DaDakota
Myst and Doom are obviously the two most underrated games in history. Seriously though, I loved Shadowgate for the NES.
A game I thought was pretty good that didnt get alot of notice was Clive Barker's Undying (PC). Its got some really good atmosphere and effects. I also liked Heavy Metal FAKK2 on the PC. I thought it had excellent graphics (quake 3 engine) and was just plain fun.
Jumpman for the Commodore 64... Oh! you meant recently? Myth was a lot of fun and one of the first games to take the resource gathering out of RTS to create a WTS (War Time Strategy) game. It also had great atmosphere with its cut scenes.
Good call on NOLF, might have to give that a second look, from meory that had some pretty cool features (like the enemy AI diving around trying to get out of your line of sight) Ahhh, Allied Assault, as soon as I get my hard drive back in the next few days, this will definately be one of the first games installed. Conquest Frontier Wars hey, never heard of it ! Actually haven't seen it in any stores where I live.
Great under-rated games: System Shock 1 and 2 -- did well in the press (won several awards), but didn't sell well. SS1 got overshadowed by Doom, and SS2 had Unreal Tournament, Quake 3, and some other high-profile games coming out at the same time . . . Planescape: Torment -- GREAT game, GREAT story, GREAT GREAT GREAT, but just didn't sell very well. Also won many awards. The Last Express -- Awesome adventure game that has an incredible story. Sold okay, but not as well as it should've, considering its critical acclaim. It sold well enough to spawn further sequels, but anyone who hasn't played "Heroes of Might and Magic II" really has to play it. Most addictive game I've ever played. I'm playing MOH:AA right now. It's not bad, but it just hasn't impressed me that much. It's okay, but it just seems to play like a console shooter IMO. Some of my feeling may be because I played the original on the PS, but there are a lot of similarities. I like the game a lot, the settings and objectives rock, the storyline is cool, but it just doesn't have the same feel (for me) as other FPS that I've LOVED: Jedi Knight, Half-Life, Deus Ex, SS1/2, etc.
