    WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The same technology used to download music from file-sharing sites makes it possible to trade p*rnography, tech experts testified at a Capitol Hill hearing Thursday.

    At a hearing of the House Government Reform Committee, parents were put on notice that they've got to do more than put p*rn blocking programs on their computers to keep x-rated images away from their children.

    "Now parents may think that they are doing something about this problem," said Rep. Henry Waxman, D-Calif. "When they put in these parental control software programs like Net Nanny or Cyber Patrol, they think they can protect their children from this p*rnography. But our investigation also found that while these programs might work to keep kids from p*rnography on the World Wide Web, they do not work in the same way for file sharing programs."

    How p*rn filters work

    Many p*rn filters block Web pages from a user's computer by weeding out sites that contain words such as "sex" and "XXX." But file sharing sites, such as Kazaa, allow direct exchanges between one computer user and another. This peer-to-peer trading cannot be intercepted by p*rn filters.

    "That's what makes it hard to police," said Randy Saaf, who operates MediaDefender.com.
    Sounding the alarm for parents

    During the hearing, a committee staffer showed how easy it is to access pornographic images. The staffer performed a Google search to reach Kazaa, then once on Kazaa searched for Britney Spears. Hundreds of downloadable files then appeared on the screen.

    Committee Chairman Tom Davis, R-Va., was surprised. "This is really very alarming to me as a parent who thought he was tech savvy on this kind of thing to see how far this has gone," he said.

    That children might download p*rn isn't the only reason for concern, Saaf said. He said his work has shown that at federal government agencies there are people who spend time at work downloading p*rn.

    I wish they'd allow sharing of classic Eddie Money videos. All I get is friggin' Elizabeth Hurley softcore everytime I do a search in Kazaa. :mad:

    Duh!...gee...you can find p*rn on Kazaa??..imagine that! :rolleyes:

    every other file you find listed on the peer to peer networks is p*rn...they are just now finding this out?

    parents just need to do like I do...dont allow filesharing programs to be instaled on my network..It's that easy.

    Dude, put it up! I've been searching for that("Shakin'") for like a month and all that comes up is Eddie Murphy stuff and the afforementioned Hurley clips.

    kind of weird they throw out britney spears when there are plenty of other ways to get p*rn to turn up in a search. maybe they just didn't wanna type in jenna jameson and then explain how they know who jenna jameson is. much easier to go the britney route i guess.

    and yeah, the tech savvy dude is just a wee out of it. i mean i know jack **** about computers and stuff and i apparently could run circles around this guy.

    and wtf, they needed a tech freakin expert to say you could get p*rn? did it really take an expert? maybe it's the same as my first paragraph. if you like getting elected and stuff, just pretend you know as little about p*rn as possible.

    and moe, maybe i was deprived in my napster days, but wasn't napster only good for music files?
