Houston's Briles To Get New Contract Rewarded For Turning Houston Program Around Dec. 18, 2003 HOUSTON, Texas - University of Houston Director of Athletics Dave Maggard announced today that he and head football coach Art Briles have a verbal agreement to rework a new contract for Briles. The details of the new contract are being worked out and further details will be provided after the Cougars' bowl game. "Art has had an outstanding year for us," said Maggard. "We want to establish stability and continuity with our football program, and a new contract is a step in that direction. "I have confidence that Art Briles is the person to move us back to national prominence with our football program." In just his first season at the helm of the Houston football program, Briles guided the Cougars to a 7-5 record and a berth in the Sheraton Hawai'i Bowl in Honolulu on Christmas Day. It is the first bowl berth for the Cougars since 1996. "My immediate focus is on the Sheraton Hawai'i Bowl," commented Briles, "but I am extremely excited and proud to be able to stay a part of the Cougar family, hopefully for many years." --- www.UHCougars.com ---
