Uhh Yeah, giving up Alou turned out to be a good idea didn't it.

Why do the Astros always make the wrong decisions.

The Astros gave up Alou because they believed Ward and Hidalgo were the future.

Let's see, Ward ended up being a big bust who is barely making it on one of the worst baseball teams in the league, and Hidalgo ended up being bad enough that the Astros had to trade him for a freaking relief pitcher, and then the Astros had to give the Mets 4 million to boot. What a joke.

All this while post Astro Moises Alou joins a division rival and is kicking ass year after year at the plate, and doing a number on the Astros this year alone. The Astros deserve what Alou is doing to them, especially as he helped finish off a 4 game sweep in his former backyard.

I tell you what I won't miss about about Hidalgo, his choke-jobs at the plate when the games were at their most important. No, I wont miss his 4 for 27 home-stand last year vs the Brewers with a division title on the line, and I wont miss his disappearance in the 2001 Division Series either.

What I like about the Astros is that they are slowly getting rid of the chokers. First wagner, now Doggy. Maybe Biggio will be next. Astros fans that like to win can only hope.

Hitting 0.275 with 15 HR and 61 RBI is not kicking ass at the plate (Alou for the Cubs in 2002). Nor is 0.280 with 22HR and 91RBI (2003). Decent numbers, but not worth $10M per year. Should the Astros really have signed Alou expecting a magical resurgence at 37 years old?

I tell you what I won't miss about about Hidalgo, his choke-jobs at the plate when the games were at their most important.

Alou sucked as bad as the rest of the them in the 1998 and 2001 playoffs, I believe.

Maybe not, but Ward in 2002 hit a disappointing 12 HR, with 72 RBI, and a .276 BA. At least Alou bounced back the next season

I realize Hidalgo had 28 and 88 and a 309 AVG, but he choked when it counted by goin 4 for 27 vs the Brewers.

Alou's numbers were pretty good too. and add in the playoffs where he batted .387 (19-49), had 8 rbis. and hit 2 HRs

Hard to do anything when no one in front of you gets on base. It's easier to pitch to any batter when no one gets on (ahem Biggio, ahem). And everytime Hildalgo was up with runners on, he would play rally killer, by grounding into double plays or flying out, where Alou would get the occasional big hit.

I dont think they would think that far ahead, but a team should never give up on a player with the ability of being clutch.

JBII, you left out Major's mentioning of Alou's salary. He may still be productive, but not worth $10. I still wish we could've traded him for Soriano.

Not to mention that he was never clutch with us.

How come these threads come up after the player starts doing well? Alou has been mediocre the past couple of years with a giant contract.

Agreed...Alou is good, but he's not worth the money...He's slow and doesn't have the cannon needed in the outfield...

Also, Dalgy is going to be missed, but again, he's not worth the money...

The point is this though, had we kept him and paid him $10 million the same people would be complaining that he was overpaid and that he was not worth it:rolleyes:

Don't forget the fact that Alou lost a lot of favor with the management when he "fell off a treadmill."

Alou is having a year this year like he did here in 98. I remember in 98 Alou had 38 homers at the end of August and didn't hit any in September. Some people thought he had a shot at 50 that season.

a consistent knock on alou has been that he has nothing in the tank as of september. pretty consistent with what we saw of him.

by the way...this guy didn't exactly show up in the playoffs for us, either.

I know for a fact that Bagwell was not happy when we let go of Alou. They are good friends. Oh well. All this talk of bloated contracts and production but you know the MLB could be like the NBA and we could be over the salary cap and still not do sh**.
I wish we still had him.:(

Just picture Berkman batting 3rd, Alou cleanup, and Kent batting 5th! Then our offense could compete with St Louis.

Astros due miss Alou's bat regardless his ritual. Aside from Berkman and Kent their are not big hitters which why they will leave men stranded on base.
