if that last shot doesn't go in, no one ever hears about Jim Valvano ever again. but it did, and subsequently all we hear/see about come March is Jimmy V and no one even remembers the legendary Guy V. Lewis. life's funny like that.
One of these years I am gonna watch this...and Akeem is gonna box out Lorenzo Charles... O.k maybe not......
I don't get why people don't give Guy V. Lewis the credit he deserves. The guy would have a NCAA Championship if it hadn't been for basically a hail mary play. Consider that he coached Lou Dunbar, Don Chaney, Elvin Hayes, Otis Birdsong, Rick Williams, Michael Young, Clyde Drexler and Hakeem Olajuwon. He was part of "the game" that put college basketball on the map. I guess running a winnning program for years doesn't count unless you win the "big one". I guess if someone coaches three years, but wins one NCAA championship that person should be a lock for the hall. Winning is everything right?
There is nothing in sports history that frustrates me more than that game. I was working for the UH team at the time and had a vested emotional interest. If Derrick Wittenberg wouldn't have been such a terrible shooter, the ball would have clanked off of the rim and game over. Instead, I am forced to watch that clown Valvano run around the court looking for someone to hug. If they'd have played the best of 7, that would have been nc state's only win. It would have been their only win in the best of 50.
it wasn't one play that lost that game, guy v. sat on the ball, n.c. state shouldn't have even been close. does that mean he shouldn't be in the HOF, of course not, but he lost that game. its not like georgetown when they lost to nova. nova played the perfect game that night. guy v. choked.
