The 10th annual Silver Glove series is set and ready to go. This year's three game series starts tonight at 7 p.m. at UH's Cougar Field as Houston (18-14, 5-1 C-USA) sends Aaron Brown (4-2, 4.62 ERA) to face the fifth-ranked Rice Owls (27-10, 8-1 C-USA) and Ryan Berry (5-1, 2.58 ERA). Both teams will be looking to capitalize on each teams errors as they shoot for C-USA positioning. Rice and UH both currently sit first and second respectively. The Silver Glove Series, which began in 1998, has produced some on the nation's best talent, including nine first-round MLB draft picks featuring UH's 2006 national player of the year, Brad Lincoln, but don't think that '98 was Rice and UH's first meeting. These two Texas schools have been gunslinging for Houston supremacy since 1948, with this year marking the 36th consecutive year that each school has played each other. If you look around today's MLB lineups, you might recognize some alumni such as the Astros players Lance Berkman (Rice '97) and Woody Williams (UH '88). This year's series will again will pit Houstonian against Houstonian, but no one will ever forget that memorable series four years ago. In 2003, at Rice's Reckling Park, the two Houston teams squared off in the Super Regionals for a spot in the College World Series. UH took the series opener 5-2 and were within one win of their first Omaha trip since 1967, but Rice played the spoiler by bouncing back to win the final two games (10-2 and 5-2) and eventually winning their first ever national championship. That '03 Super Regional featured six first round draft picks: Ryan Wagner, Brad Sullivan, David Aardsma, Phillip Humber, Jeff Niemann and Wade Townsend. Rice's players to watch this weekend include: Joe Savery (1B, P), Cole St. Clair (P) and Aaron Luna ( DH). While UH boasts Luis Flores (P, C), Jimmy Cesario (OF) and Dustin Kingsbury (3B). The series will continue on Saturday at 7 p.m. and concludes Sunday afternoon with a start time of 1 p.m. Friday's game will be nationally televised by CSTV and the games can also be heard throughout the weekend on KTRU 91.7 FM and on-line at UHCougars.com.
