Maybe its just me, being the BIGGEST Hakeem fan there is (I idolize the man), while also being a hardcore cougar and whatnot, but doesnt it bother yall that hakeem hasnt really given back to UH? I mean clyde tried (very unsuccessfully) but at least he gave back, ya know? I know that being charitable isnt something that Muslims are to be open about, but Ive never heard anything about Hakeem giving back to the school that put him on the map. If any of yall have, then please let me know, cause its just aboutthe only thing that bothers me about Dream. Otherwise, it bothers me Hakeem- if youre reading this- UH athletics could REALLY use your help... maybe help rennovate Hofeinz? or just a visit would be nice too I didnt really know where else to put this thread- so here it is.
Hakeem does give to charity, but he has and is a VERY private giver. One of the people who works for the Rockets told me a couple years back that Hakeem NEVER disclosed his charitable contributions because he did not believe in drawing attention to the giver. He always wanted those things to remain private. So, just because YOU don't see it happening doesn't mean it isn't. It is actually very likely that Hakeem has given to UH. He just chooses to keep his private affairs private.
thats what I hope as well, being a Muslim myself, I try to do the same. but i was just wondering if anyone knew for a fact that he has?
Even though I barely used, it's a freakin amazing gym. I'm going to get an alumni membership if I stay in Houston
i made my name in that rec center. i blocked the **** out of some girls, and then immediately apologized.
I know he has helped some kids out in the past with scholarships and the such. I think Dream gets a bad rap because he never talks about his charitable contributions, that he doesn't seek publicity for it. He's probably one of the more charitable former athletes there is. David Robinson is also another guy that does tons of stuff in his local community and beyond, but he seeks very little publicity for it. On a side note, why he should he contribute anything to UH athletics? Aren't there more worthy causes out there, you know, like feeding the poor or providing scholarships for college students? I am a former Cougar myself, but if I had that kind of money and felt charitable I would invest in something other than college athletics. Just my two cents...
It's very much against his beliefs to discuss his charitable donations. I'm not sure this thread is even appropriate because it's fishing for an answer.
That's not true. My sigma nu frat brother Mike Baker dropped a cool $1 million to have the indoor track named after him.
telling other people about your donations is far far different than trying to find out what someone did. only one of those 2 is a wrong in Islam. Its the "Do not let your one hand know what the other is doing" type thing. Im just wondering... and guys, like I said before, I idolize the guy. This isnt a 'bad rap' type thing. In an age where athletes are more and more about the self (see: Clemens, Roger) I totally and completely understand that Hakeem is a VERY generous man. Heck, he built the Dawah center instead of demolishing the downtown library. so im not taking a shot at hakeem, I just want some clarification/ justification/ examples.
Maybe its because people would idolize him that he gives his charity in privacy? Why would Hakeem even have to give back to UH? He got an education, yes, but he also played unlike any other player at UH. I think he has better things to give his money for. He has given numerous times in charity events for feeding the poor, hungry, and homeless, all which I think are much more important than giving back to UH.
Nope, he might have contributed but i paid for 3 years on my tuition after it was passed and it hadn't even been built yet. It finally finished after i graduated and i didnt even get to use it.
Dude, it's pretty sweet. But as an Architecture grad student, I have barely used it in the three years I've been here.
I have been there after i graduated a couple of times and had to spend 10 bucks or something to get in...i wanted to ring someones neck...all the money i spent...
