I was cleaning out my wallet today, and realized that my driver's lisence is missing. I have a flight March 1st, but unfortuantely... it looks like the process for getting it replaced out-of-state might take longer than this. How am I going to get on that plane? I don't have a passport. Once when I misplaced my lisence, the airline accepted my BC ID in conjunction with my social security card, but I doubt after 9/11 there's much chance of that. Any ideas would be helpful... am I just screwed?
Call the DMV and ask them how long it would take. I know they digitize photos (at least mine was). So if you lose your ID, you basically tell them and they just mail you another one without having to take a picture or anything...
You might be able to get an expedited processing on a new drivers license if you pay a fee. You can get a passport in 3 days for an extra $90. But, you'll probably need your drivers license to get a passport. I would think you'd have enough time before March to get a new ID, you just need to get on it now and get the ball rolling on it.
Yeah, I already called them. Unfortunately, the guy said it usually takes 2-3 weeks for processing, + transit time... + delays. First, they have to process my request. Then they send me the form. Then, I send it back. Then they process it . He said that the 2-3 week figure is sort of "optimal." So if everything goes right, it's possible that I'll get it in time. Of course, it might not, which leave me searching for alternatives.
Did you try contacting the airline and explaining to them the problem? Im sure something can be worked out.
If you go down to the DMV and take care of it there within the next couple of days I think you'll get your new license before March.
But I'm not a MA resident. I"m a *tx* resident. And I've already been to the Texas site nad have requested my new lisence.
You do NOT need a license to get a passport. There is no stipulation that you have to be able to drive in order to travel the world. A certified birth certificate should suffice.
An alternative would be to get a simple ID card instead of a liscence from the DMV or the DPS, but I don't know if that helps you much.
Woohoo! I'm glad I checked instead of just reading their on-line information. They said it would be fine if I presented my social security card, my credit card, and my college ID. Thanks for all the suggetsions!
You can't just go down there and fill out whatever forms you need? That would cut down on some time. I'd rather waste a little bit of money for a pretty decent chance of getting the replacement than almost be assured of wasting the trip!
