it is a badass time, and it's free to get it. The BBQ Cookoff area is awesome, its basically a slimmed down version of the one at the Rodeo...
My brother goes there and sent me the info...I'm only going to be in town Friday night, but may just hangout downtown...
Is that the only music they are doing? I remember when the fraternities and student council got together and created Frontier Fiesta back in the mid-90's. There used to be this really cool music fest on campus with great college and indie bands as well as a bunch of local acts, but there was a fight backstage one year between a couple of hip hop artists and a number of "concerned" folks decided they needed more "wholesome entertainment." Never forget that quote in the Daily Cougar. Essentially, the fraternities and sororities took it over. When the other group wanted to continue to put on the music festival, as a way to force them out, the people in charge of the Fiesta drained all of the funds from the student entertainment budget for their first Fiesta, essentially killing any chance of the other music day returning. There was a HUGE furor over it because lots of students wanted the music fest instead of a hoe-down. It was particularly controversial because they wanted to eliminate all alternative and rap/hip hop acts completely. There were a number of protests by student groups who were upset over comments by promoters suggesting that black acts in particular were not good for the image of the school despite the large numbers of African American students on campus. It got even worse when the frats suggested a "cowboys and indians" theme complete with "wampum" money. To make it worse, they alienated Latino students by calling it a "Fiesta" but denying them participation with the planning of the event. It was a mess. Looking around online, it doesn't look like they've done a lot to make it much better though they've clearly addressed the diversity part.
Yeah, seems like every year FF is always a lightning rod for controversy. That is how things operate here. There are just too many people and groups to please, and it ends up being one big mess. The greeks have completely hijacked the festival, that's for sure.
